I posted earlier but doesn't appear on Board. John Smith's replacing seals article says: "On early 8N models removing the backing plate and axle is somewhat unnecessary..." but recommends it. I'd like to skip this extra step if axle flange & backing plate still look intact after bolts out. I can still replace the axle with bad threads. Incidentally, if I go the whole route looks like I"ll have to remove the brake actuating arms. Do they go inside the trumpets? Any problem? Thanks again. Angelo

Thanks to all. Sorry for the confusion; I was stuck on backing plate removal. Looking again @ size/shape of brake rod opening in the backing plate, it seems once brake support plate, retainers, etc., are out I could pull back the backing plate and rotate to line up hole with actuating lugs @ end of camshaft rod and remove it w/o having to remove the rod itself. Have I got it now?

Remove it all!!

The brake rod ends that go in the trumpet housing need grease, fill the socket full while you have it apart, of some good marine grade grease.

When you put it all back, do it with a coat of Ultra Blue Silicone, it is tranny oil resistant.

Dunk take this from a guy that knows his sealer,,, stay away from blue silicon,,, its just a tad better than clear and at the bottom of the list as far as automotive silicon is concerned,,, it also is not safe to use in some applications,,, blue was the fist RTV "automotive" sealer probably around 1980,,, it got flushed rite quick,,, course i don't spec folks that don't use it daily to keep up with changes,,, I am amazed its still on the shelf for sale,,, I have a pix of a sealer I use and gonna make a post some day cuzz its suggested not to use it in one application here,,, I have done one of those case studies to prove it will help make your tractor last longer,,, not see if it will ruin it.

The old original blue silicone sealer really sucked. It looked just like blue tinted Jello, and did not seal much better. I hated that crap. The Permatex Ultra Blue line is state of the art and nothing at all like that old crap. Ultra Blue is one of the best silicone sealers on the market and is the same formula as the Loctite 587 blue industrial silicone sealant used by manufacturers such a Caterpillar when assembling their oil pans, valve covers, timing covers, etc to their engines. Try some of the current Ultra line sometime. You'll like it.

I had my fill of the original blue silicone sealer,,, it caused more problems than it helped,,, I have never seen the new ultra blue and don't spec I will go look'n for it,,, no need to,,, ultra gray or black,,, The Right stuff named RTV or even better Chrysler RED made special for gear lube is my choice,,, just the word blue brings back old memories,,, it had some kind of slimy texture to it and would not bond,,, I did git hold of a bad batch of permatex ultra black in the aerosol,,,, after a few come back leaks it did not take me long to send the case back (24 cans @ $3.00 haft price),,, know wonder it was a deal,,, it was bad and they knew it,,, I will not use RTV out of a squeeze cheese can ever again

What ever they put in the original blue shore nuff would take your breath away,,, its still on the market usually in a cheaper line,,,, you know how ford guys are cheap arses,,, i spec they would go the cheap Rt. and get a bate of the bad stuff

The reason you do not need to remove the backing plate is because the early 8N did not have the inner seal. The brake arm just sits in the trumpet.

What is it you are doing? I don't see what the brake arm has to do w/ replacing the seals.
