Problem Installing Front Mounted Distributor/Coil as Assembl

I have been unsuccessful installing a known, good intact Distributor w/coil attached to my 9N-8N. System worked before but coil burned up. For ease of installation, a mechanic provided me a complete coil and distributor Assy off of a working tractor in rebuild (I personally witnessed). I was told that the base of the distributor would only be flush if the tang on the distributor shaft fits inside the slot of the camshaft. On each attempt, I've tried to align the tang where the distributor body appears to be flush on the engine and I tighented the 2 bolts carefully. Each attempt has failed, and I can't get a spark from a body grounded spark plug. With 12V Batty, 6V from my resistor is read at the coil. Battery recharged on 2 occasions. I thought perhaps my alignment of the tang and slot was 180 out, but I was told that can't be done? Am I missing a critical step? Any ideas of guidance to this non-mechanically inclined dunce would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just to make sure, pull the distribuitor cap off and have someone hit the start button and make sure you see the rotor go round and round.

if so, you got it on correctly... now pull the distrib and make sure the points are gapped at .015 on the high spot of the lobe.

gently stretch the pig tail spring on the bottom of the coil.

post back.
