9N - Do I have a Sherman Trans???

Hello, I bought a Ford 9N recently. I really have no experience with these old Fords. Here is my question- The tractor has a shifter on the left side, near the bell housing. It indexes three positions. In the middle position it does nothing, like a neutral. The forward position is a low range. All the way to the rear is a higher range. I found some threads here that talk about Sherman transmissions. In one I read where the shifter should pull outwards to shift into a third range. I tried pulling my shifter outwards and shifting it forward, rear and it doesn't seem to move out much and plus nothing changes in the gearing. I don't think pulling it out does anything. Is mine a Sherman? or is it a factory type shifter and working as expected?
Thanks for any help with this.

We have the same Sherman in our 2N. It is actually called a "Sherman Step-Up Transmission"

The 3 speed shermans were pretty rare in that model of tractor. I am sure you have a 2 speed sherman just like the one I have. They are more common. Forward is regular speed ( what you call low) and pulled back is overdrive. (high) Does it have a round ball on the end of the shifter.. They really helped the 9N because now you have a road gear and high 2nd is somewhat slower then straight 3rd.

Thanks for the reply. I am surfing the web this morning and checked back for a reply.

Yes, it has a round ball at the end of the shifter. So, when using the transmission, which gear and range should I use with a bushhog. I have a 5' bush hog. Can my 9N handle a 5' hog? Which gear and range is best for that? I read someplace that the Sherman changes the PTO speed. Is that true with our two range model? My PTO has one of those clutches on it so a bush hog won't cause the trans to keep turning when I try to stop.
Thanks.

Art--, You have the identical set I use for brush hogging, 1940N, with Sherman overdrive and a 5 foot brush hog. If your tractor is in normal condition it will have no problem with the 5 footer. In-as-much as the Sherman increases the PTO speed you have the posibility of operating the brush hog at a higher RPM than it is designed for. I often shift my tractor into low and the Sherman to high under conditions that warrant. With the tractor in second gear and the Sherman in high, you can just hear the blades sing as you cut, probably too high RPM. I basicaly run the tractor in either low or second gear when cutting. Good luck and have fun,but be very carefull when working around your PTO shaft and its connections to equipment. Ron

Yours is also identical to my 2N with sherman step up tranny. Works great for chopping up the scrub oak on my lot. Keep it in low gear and "normal" range on the sherman. When the ORC is on and the hog off, that ORC can be dangerous. I made a cover for it out of 4" sewer pipe fittings to keep shoe laces, sleves fingers etc. out of harms way.

AP:

Yes the Sherman does affect the PTO speed. If, as it sounds, yours is an overdrive (2 speed), use low (direct) for PTO work.

What is your Sherman shifter handle made of? The combo (3 speed) shifter is cast iron.

John Smith's site has very good information about Sherman transmissions and how to identify them. I believe there is a link to his site on the left. If not, I'm sure someone will post it for you.

I walked down to the barn to look at it. Standing, facing the left side, the shifter goes a little towards the front, then turns and goes towards the left and up at about a 45 degree angle. The shifter is about 3/8" rod, with a small knob about 1 - 1 1/4" diameter. Sitting in the seat the shifter is angling up to the left.

So, it is probably the 2 speed overdrive version? How do I change it's gear oil? I am a maintenance freak and when I get a new piece of equipment I want to change all the fluids.
Thanks.

Yes.

All combos have a cast iron shifter. Yours is almost certainly the rather common overdrive.

There is no need to change the oil in the Sherman. It is lubed from the main transmission. Simply keep good clean oil in the main sump and the Sherman will be fine.
