my buddys 8N 1952 has oil or it looks like oil around the area outside the wheel where the big nut is. he said the level has never gone down, what is it.

There doesn"t seem to be any on the inside of the rim and the right side is bone dry, concern ?

They usually pour right into the brake shoe area & around the axle nut making a pretty big mess. At least that's how mine did.

Not too bad of a job best I remember. Wallering a loaded rear tire around is probably the worst of it.

If the tractor is a 1952, there are actually two wheel seals, one in the trumpet housing riding on the axle (inner) and a second on the hub (outer). Early 8N's only had the outer seal. Originally there was also a cork gasket behind the hub that sealed the splines so that oil would not seep past the splines to the outside as you are describing. These gaskets are usually gone now-a-days.

Seeping oil may also indicate that the hub is loose on the axle. This is very bad and the nut should be tightened up ASAP. If the hub is loose too long, it will wear out the splines on the hub, axle, or both and you will never be able to tighten it up. The nut should be tightened to 450 ft-lbs, or in other works, really, really, really tight. Then the locking ring needs to be installed to prevent the nut from loosening.

The axle is supposed to be 1/8" or more inside the hub. Because the big nut got loose, the hub wore out. Now, the axle sticks out past the hub. The seals are inside the axle trumpet & behind the hub.

If you are lucky, it is just the seals. Not a hard job at all. If you are unlucky, you get to replace the hub & the axle. See how far the axle sticks out past the hub?
