Ok we were changing the oil on my buddys 8n.Or should I say we are GOING to be changing it. I assume you pull drain plug, take off canister cover pull out filter, chg gasket, reinstal filter, fill with 30 weight oil and run it .

Do you need to prime the pump if so how ? Or do you just start it ?

Not sure if I am the Dan you are asking, but the bolts that hold the limit chain brackets are the ones I used to attach the PTO cover I made. I'll re-post the description in a new post.

I've seen some canisters with drain plugs, and some without. Not sure if the ones w/o are replacements or what??? But not all of them have drains...

Hobo - the last 1010 Napa/wix filter I bought (9/07) did come with the cap bolt seal. Cost $10 or $11 at CNH.

If you do put oil in the canister,,, ease the filter in,,, don't drop it in are you will have a mess,,, bout haft full werks great

It don't make enny difference but i do add oil to the canister

Best I remember a 1010 Napa/wix filter does come with the cap bolt seal,,, may-b someone will confirm that,,, i just used my last fram filter,,, not plan'n on using a fram again,,, it does not have the cap bolt seal,,, fudge'em if they can not supply a cap bolt seal

NO NEED to put oil in the filter canister.

Since it's a "bypass filter", the oil leaving the filter just goes "back to sump" (through the governor), and there's NO oil deprivation the the main or rod bearings while the canister fills.

Pop a new filter in there, refill the crankcase and "let 'er buck"!

You also need to pull the drain plug on the canister and thoroughly clean the canister. Use rags but don't leave any threads, etc. behind.

Put oil in the engine crankcase and start it. I use 10W-40 the year around here in Iowa, but do not use tractor much in winter.

Don't forget some oil has to refill the filter and housing.

there is NO drain on the bottom of the canister just an oil line ??

Do you fill the canister before putting the cover on it ?

There should be a 1/4 or 1/8 pipe plug on the bottom of the oil filter canister. Pull that to drain the canister.

Osweld,

Does your canister look like this?

third party image

If so, the drain is on the lower left of the canister. If not, I'm not sure what kind of canister is on the tractor.

Picture stolen from John Smith's web site.

Change the oil when the engine is hot. Make sure you use a gasket under the drain plug. If you don't have one, make one. Make sure you have a quarter size gasket under the nut on the oil filter canister. Most oil filters come w/ the large ring gasket; wet it w/ oil first. No need to prime anything, just add 6 quarts of oil & save a little for the cup in the air filter.
