I was hauling some firewood and shut the tractor (9N) off to unload. When I was about to restart the tractor I notice a considerable amount of gas leaking from the carb. I tried to start it because I needed to get it into the garage but it was obviously flooded.

Where do I go from here?

Could gas have gotten into the oil sump?

I would really appreciate any advice. Thanks

Ron

Shut the fuel supply off.Then start and run at about half thottle till it stops running to empty the fuel bowl and the float will drop down to allow the needle to open completly and then when the fuel flows again it will flush out the dirt if you have the carburetor filter in place.CENTAUR
I'm now thinking because the carb was overhauled a few years ago (not too many hours of use) and because this seemed to happen suddenly, perhaps it is a piece of dirt that can be flushed out. Is this worth a try or should I just do the overhaul?

Thanks

ronjoh;

The only way you can "FLUSH" dirt particals out of a carb., is to open up the carb. and blow it out with air. Once dirt or a particals gets lodged in any one of the jets it most times going to stay in that carb., and be moved around from place to place, clogging up first one jet or valve, then another.

The elbo screen filter is only in place to stop debri from entering the carb, from the gas tank to the sediment bowl,through the gas line to the elbo filter. For what ever reason, I think that, a simple cleaning of the inside of your carb., and especially in the float bowl, float needle valve, area is the only way you can solve your Problem!!!!!

And while you are at it/in there, air blow ALL the inner passages, to insure good gas flow and operation of the carb.

It very well might be that all you need to do is a simple cleaner, BUT....you will not know, until you have opened up that carb. and see the inside of that carb.

This is not a very hard thing to do! All you should need is a little time and a carb. kit. NO BIG DEAL. Just read up on it in your FO-4 manual, and follow the instructions that comes with the carb. kit.

BTW: I do this simple proceedure on my 2N, at least once a yr., and I usually find debri in my carb., every time.!!!!!

I hope this helps.
Here is a picture of the three fuel filters, you should also clean out.

Good luck with what ever you decide to do!!!

I had a blow gun that had a rubber tip, but it was for keeping my lips from getting cut!!!!!

I wanted to be a Tearerist when I was young, but when I went to blow up a school bus, I burnt my mouth on the tailpipe. That smarted!!!!!

Gary, Gary, Gary....

We use to take potatoes to elementary school with us, when we got off the bus, we would walk behind the bus, take the potato, and put it on the exhaust pipe, and jam it in with our heel, most of the time the bus didn't get out of the parking lot before dying.

As soon as a couple of of did the dirty deed, we hit the class rooms, and our desk, never did get caught.

Back then we could get cherry bombs, and m-80s, we would take them to elementary school, we would also take a cigarette, and a match or two.

At recess we would sneak off, light the cigarette, poke the fuse of the firecracker in a little more than half way down, and put it down where we wanted it to go off at.

We would be some innocent children in class, when the cigarette, burned down (read timer) and went off, we never did get caught for that either.

Even in high school, when we would blow the doors slap off the lockers.

Today if we WERE caught, we would be labeled, terrorists.

We were just smart kids having fun.

As I have never attempted this before, are there any tips I should know about. I really appreciate the knowledge and experience of the guys on this board.

Thanks

Having an air compressor, and a blowgun with a rubber tip nozzle, to blow out all of the orifices good, is nearly a necessity.

ronoh;

Just be carful, when you dismantle the carb., that you do not bend the float anyway. they are made of brass and easy to bend or puncher.
In the carb kit for your model #, there will be an instruction sheet, that will give ya the instructions, step by step. If you run into any ???s or probs. with your carb. cleaning/overhaul, don't be afraid to post back. Myself or someone will help ya.!!! The ticket to this is DO NOT leap, before asking???s. You don't want to bugger up your carb.!!!!

ronjoh;

You bet!!!! That can and will cause that. Here is what a carb. looks like, that has not been cleaned/overhauled, for a long time. :shock:

See the rust on the top, and the gunk in the bottom. Your carb. may not look as bad as this one, but it could.

Get a carb. kit, and go through it . At least clean it out once in a while.

i kind of have the same problem but i think i have a float problem. it is a brand new carb and some times more than not i have to seperate it in half and free my float. The local gurus here in abilene say that is because of the overseas origin of the carb is the problem. they have seen three carbs in the past two days. do you know of anywhere to find original ford carbs or am i chasing a red heron on this one?

Shut the fuel supply off.Then start and run at about half thottle till it stops running to empty the fuel bowl and the float will drop down to allow the needle to open completly and then when the fuel flows again it will flush out the dirt if you have the carburetor filter in place.CENTAUR

It is the needle valve that is leaking. The one controlled by the float. It is always good practice to turn off the fuel if the tractor is going to be shut down very long.

There are two kinds of valves needles. One has a rubberized tip. Which I think is better than the all steel needle. Shouldn't trust either one though.
