Seems every time I clean off grease something else is broke, this old girl will cost me an arm and leg before done.

Is it possible to repair the cracks in the center axle. Just sandblasted it and the cracks showed up. They are not to big at this time. Need advice on what to do. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Those look bad.Drill a hole en the end of them v them out, weld them with a mig.I would make a couple of plates out of 3/8 maybe and reinforce that area while I was welding.Just cut them to where they lay in there good and weld them so if it does break there, you have the plate holding out past the cracked place. You would want to preheat it before you weld it.I would heat it not red hot but hot in a circular motion out past the crack some.Plus when I got it welded I would grind it smooth on top which makes the weld stronger and keeps it hot too for a while.I would weld the reinforcement plate before it cooled very much, just 4 or 6 2 inch long beads, maybe a few more if that didnt look like enough,to hold in case it breaks there. If when you grind on the metal sparks come off like normal its cast steel which you can weld with mig and 7018.Migs best.Thats just my opinion,I could be wrong. There is also the chance it will crack into a bunch of pieces as well,so you might start looking for another one.If it survives all that welding without any cracks it will most likely last a long time.

Charley, If it were me I'd look into finding another one. But you know everyone says I'm crazy and way way too much a perfectionist. You could have the welding shop beaf that sucker up while they are at it. Make it stronger than before by adding some extra metal. That's if you go the weld it up route.

Mark.

Those cracks are very, very common on 9N and 2N axles but they are rare on the 8N. Which one of these axles looks like yours?

Ok, you've got a 9N front axle, not 8N. Kind of suspected that with all the cracks.

Thanks to you all, there is a good welding shop down the road that does a lot of farm equip and trucks, will take it down there tomorrow and see what he can do. Without this board I would not have tried to restore the 8n on my own.

8n-charley,My 2N axle was cracked just about identical to yours.I really didnt notice it till I glass beaded it.I veed it out and welded it up with a mig welder and 75%25% c02-argon gas.It welded up great. The axle is malleable iron and will weld up fine without cracking.

The axle is a steel forging, mallable iron would not take the pounding that a front axle gets.

You would want to verify with a spark test, but the successor replacement axles are 1040 steel. A good welder can do the spark check and appropriately weld this for you.

My 1939 9N axle is cracked in that exact same spot. It is not down into the flat part like yours, only across the top flange. I plan on just putting it back on.

I sure am glad that I didn't sandblast mine and find cracks like that!!

Of course, I didn't sandblast mine, and have NO idea if it has cracks like that or not.

I can't for the life of me, figger out what would have caused cracks like that, on what *I think* to be the top, one would think cracks would be on the bottom, if anywhere.

Keep us posted!!

I guess thats why they put grease fittings on on disk harrow boxings&bushings. My 2N has had a fitting there for I know 50 years .The grease will push out any dirt that gets in there. Go figure.

What do you think about the cracks?!!?!?

Dayum, it would take 70 years for the abrasive dirt, to do anything close to as bad as those cracks!!

My '49 doesn't have it either.

I may be wrong, but I think that zerk was an aftermarket add on.

The fix would be welding;

Drill a hole at the end of the crack(s) ~1/4 inch diameter. (this negates the focus of two different forces from one concentrated area to a wider area)

V out the crack with a grinder.

Heat the whole thing up to ~ 500 F.

Use the correct rod for what I assume is cast iron.

Cool slowly as reasonably possible after welding.
