Took the axle to the welder and he wants $130 to fix by welding a plate on both sides, said a new one would be his suggestion.

But that is only where the problem starts, I need to buy bearings etc for the spindles and hubs. The spindle is 9n3107-B not in parts manual the other has no number, the hub is #30589 also not found, the other has no number, the steering arms are 2n3131 and 2n3130, no numbers on the axle extensions.

The tractor is a 47 8n SN 8n370, front dist, transmission is 2SHK11 and the hyd is 8n1024.

What is seems is I have a Henitz 57 variety. Could really use help on how to put the front axle back together and buy the right parts, the parts manual doesn't help me much in matching them up. Got the thing laying all over the garage and don't know what parts to buy to put her back together.....thanks in advance.

That seems kinda high.Whats he want to weld just the cracks?Like somebody else said its probly been like that a long time.It doesnt look good but it might last a long time.I think I would ask another welder, maybe just do the cracks.I also would look for another one.If you can find another one maybe for less than 130 would be good.I thought you were gonna weld it when I posted before what I would do.If you know how to weld and think you can do it,you ought to be able to do it for a lot less than 130 dollars.

V the cracks out and weld with a stainless rod.

Not mine, but if it was I would take the suggestion someone gave and drill the ends of the cracks, v out the crack, then weld it up. Adding the plate would ice the cake, but in my mind probably not necessary provided the weld ended up looking ok. Just my guess, but I bet it did not crack last week or maybe even this decade and may have been in service that way for many years. I had an old pickup with an odd ball power steering which used a slave cylinder. One day the cast bracket to the slave broke. I brought it in to a welder here where I work and he welded the cast bracket. It did not look the best, but he said it would crack some place else if it ever did fail again. It never did cause a problem, and was that way when I sold it a few years later. I have a Ford 5000 right now with a welded bolster in it. At first when I saw the weld I panicked, then realized that I have been running a loader on it hauling big bales and it is holding up fine, so why worry about it. The weld may be the strongest part of the part after it is finished provided it is done right.

How about doing it like the airplane wing structures.... drill a hole at end of crack to stop the spread, then run it until it crashes, ... I mean breaks.

Switching to an 8N axle isn't that simple. The axle extensions and radius rods are different, too, and need to match the axle. Same goes for the spindles and steering arms. If you want to switch to an 8N axle center you need all the rest of the 8N components to go with it. Everything you have right now is 9N-2N.

I have a NAA center front axle on my 9N. It had a loader on it when I bought it, so the previous owner decided to go heavy duty. The problem is that it limits what widths it can be adjusted to. The radius rods will work, but not at all widths. I did grind some off the "loops" where the radius rods span the center axle. If you can get one cheap go for if you'er not a purist.

Is it possible you have a 9N/2N tractor with a 8N replacement engine (very common)? How many speeds does your tranny have - 3 or 4?

Its 4 speed, it seems the front end is 2n-9n and the rest 8n, its a early 8n SN 370, maybe they were using up old parts at mfg. There is also no ID# on the front motor support so it makes ID the parts nil.

I have both a front end off a 2N and also one from an early 8N. Both are parts so if you where close enough to me I'd sell them. The front axle from the 2N is already off but the one on the 8N is still on a rolling chassis.
