Stabilizer arms

I was using my scraper blade to plow snow this morning (in reverse). I hit a snowbank too hard and broke a check chain. This badly bent one of the lift arms. No problem - straightened and welded the lift arm - we're up and running again. Question: should I be using stabilizers when plowing in reverse? I never have because I thought it would put too much load on the stabilizers and possible bend one. What do you think? Thanks.

One end of the stabilizer arms attach to the implement on the same pins as the lift arms....but then the other end of the stabilizer arms attach to the tractor axle housing on a bracket on the bottom side. the bracket should have a hole in it that you attach a another set of pins (just like the implement, one on each side. these are shorter pins. I will post a picture later....(I have to go put one on for the picture...

That's the only thing I don't use em on because my old plow doesn't have enough shank to hook them up together.
They do steady up the box & scrape blade though.

I have always ran stabilizer arms, on every thing I have.

I don't have bottom plows.

From some of the stuff I have read here, I may try the all purpose plow without them sometime.

I can't see how it would make much difference on it though.

8N,

Use the stabilizer bars, the blade will work much better.

Where in VT are you, we got about eight inches last night and today.

We are supposed to get another nine or ten tonight.

Scott, in Worcester, Vermont.

Thanks all. Appreciate your help. Scott - I'm in Elmore. It's been snowing most of the day with more coming. The 8N handles it well though.

I am about 10 miles down the road, if you see me turning around on route 12 stop in and say hi. I have a 46 2n with a front mounted snow plow.

Hi neighbor. Will do! I'm on Elmore Mountain Rd., about half way between Elmore and Stowe. You do the same. I've got a '48 8N with rear blade.

I use the one stabilzer bar for everything including plowing, my property is on a hillside and this keeps equipment directly behind me rather than falling down the hill. Stan

I have always used stabilizers whenever I have used my 3 point hitch. There is probably some situation where they shouldn't be used, but I sure can't think of it.

The past 35 years I have always used stabilizer bars regardless of implement. I think they tend to reinforce the lift arms helping to prevent damage. Regards...

Sorry ALLTHUMBS as I was referring to dry land farming where we plowed everyhing with the three point flat bottom 12&14inch plows and cultivated with the two row cultivator which has a stabilizer built in to follow the row on the flat land.Parten me as you may not have wittnessed how this works. We all come from differant backgrounds.I am in my 80s and am learning things every day on the web. This computor fills out my day. I have plowed with middle busters, cultivators, box scraper and bush hogged with stablizers on. I have not had any problems using them. We are talking about the bars that are connected under the axle near the wheels and back onto the same implement pin that the lift arms connect to? Regards...

The three-point is designed to operate with the tractor moving forward and pulling the implement. So using the blade in reverse will definitely cause some problems. Yes, you need to buy a set a stabilizer arms, one on each side. They are designed to keep the implement from swaying sideways when it is undesirable to do so, and in this case, it is very undesirable. In fact, I would think you would want to use the bars anytime with the blade. Another good application is if you have a three-point boom.
