Hi all and thanks for all the posts on restoring and repairing Ford tractors. I have an early 8n, front distributor tractor. While I cannot see the engine serial number the casting stamp on the side indicates Nov. 47. Question, the upper lift arms on the 3pt allow the leveling box to rub on my axle. I suspect that they may be installed a spline off on the rockshaft that comes out of the hydralic lift cover. While I have the FO-4 manual are the upper lift arms typically hard to remove off of the shaft?
Thanks again for all the posts. I will be doing rear seals and possibly hubs and bearings depending on what I find in there.
...Jim

I've been working on my '40 for a few months now off and on. I noticed last weekend, upon re-attaching the gear box and rod on other side, that I have this same problem.

The lift worked fine and had no problems before it was parked a few years ago. It still had granpa's 4' bushhog attached when I had it shipped up here.
I did replace the hydraulic pump not long ago when I found a crack in the old one just behind the drain plug that had been JB welded.

Might I not have got something re-installed correctly when I put the new pump in? Or could it have something to do with the lack of fluid in the system for a while?

It seems to be still posting in Jim's thread.

Doing anything to the hydro pump, should not have anything to do with the bottoming out (relaxed) point of the top lift arms.

The dog bone wear, the end of the piston (where the dogbone fits in), and the cup that the other end of the dog bone fits, might just make the difference.

And I don't think it would have to be all of that much, to make a big difference on the upper lift arms...

But you never know, I may just be all off my rocker again...

Providing your 8N's hydraulic system is working properly the lift arms will drop a few inches lower in draft control mode than in position control. If left in the position control mode as it should be for general use you should not have the problem of the box rubbing the axle.

You cannot get the splines off on the rockshaft. The splines are "V" shaped, but every so often they have a flat topped spline - so you can't get the orientation off.

The issue you are seeing is due to wear in your lift cover likages and afflicts MANY N Seies owners (me included).

HTH,
Dan
