Polarizing?

Just noticed this on an old tractor site thats not really around anymore:

The generator is polarized by disconnecting the field wire and the battery wire from their respective terminals at the regulator and momentarily touching the two wires together (the engine is not running during this procedure). This quick surge of current correctly polarizes the generator. Reconnect the field wire and the battery wire to their respective terminals on the regulator.

I wasn't needing to do it, just happened to see that & wondered what the deal was cause everyone says "batt to arm". After looking closer at that page it was for 53-64 tractors. I thought the entire page was for 9/2/8n's. Had me going there for a while!

NEVER do that on an "N", with an "A System". It WOULD work, though, with the "B system"-style of charging system on LATER Ford tractors.

jon, you have to be careful. There is more than one type of generator. In the context that that advice was given it was probably correct (those involved in the discussion probably understood which generator type they were talking about).
As a blanket statement, it doesn't stand.

Since this is the "nboard" it is not applicable here.
I bet there is an exception somewhere....maybe an N that has been fitted with some other generator, but for N's in general, that does not fit.

See attached photo.
