I'm wanting to put "Mater" my 47 8N to work this spring discing up some old fields. I've been looking at new and used discs for a while but I really don't know anything about what I'm loking at. :?: How much of a disc can an 8N handle? What is the reason for some discs having notches? If I'm buying used what should I be looking for that would help me establish a condition? Any help would be great. Directing me to some material on working the ground would be a plus.

I've used it like that only a couple of times as in normal use for garden preparation in my soil fold over is not needed. Angelo

I appreciate that. Mine can be folded but I never have done it before. It's so long I thought it might change the leverage of it if I had to go out on the road. The way it is now it's all brake steering!

Other than obvious broken/bent/missing parts, I think bearings are costly & a lot of labor to replace, at least on some models.

agree with soundguy, different scenarios. i use a 8n but also have a 640, i have a 5.5" that works well for me. of course i use it on two places. went with the smaller disc so i could haul it to the ranch that is 45 miles away. i use it more with the 640 than the N, the N is usually pulling a shredder around on the small jobs i do closer to home.

I have an old 8' dunham drag disc converted to 3 pt. hitch that I ues with my '46 2N. Rear tires(12.4x28) are loaded with a 135# wheel weight on each wheel. Bumper on front weighs 100#. I've had no problems on the rolling ground where I've used it. I just use a little "common sense" when turning uphill with disc lifted. Disc weighs around 8-900#. Mr. Bob

Discs are pretty heavy. My Ford series 201 6 1/2 ft is just a bit heavy for EvelyN. When I got the disc it had an extra 600 lbs of elevator counter balance weights attached, which I removed. It had been pulled behind a 45 hp tractor. It must have cut like crazy at almost double its regular weight.

I won't put any extra weight on it. Rather just go around another time.

What was the purpose of a fold over, just easier to transport?

as the other guys said.. 6-6.5' works great.

lots of variables on gangs, blades, soil, frame / weight.. etc...

I have either a 6 or 6.5' that I pull behind my '51 8N. It pulls it pretty good. The notched disk blades help cut up the soil better than the smooth disks. My disk has notched blades on the front and back gangs. I lucked up and found an old Dearborn 10-135 fold over disk local for reasonable money.

A 6 foot will work real good unless its real heavy. I use one on my 9N and 8N but had to take one of the weights I had on it off because the front end was to light for it
