Dies when bushogging?

My 50 8n 6v front mount dist. will start right up. No smoke. Running perfect and will start to die after about 15 minutes of bushogging. Grass is tall but dead right now. I am not cutting too low and I have just sharpened blades on the 4 foot cutter. Once it begins to die I can kill the bushog and drive around without the cutter going and the tractor will recover and drive around fine. It is only when I am bushogging that it will die. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks to all those who helped me with my crankshaft pulley problem. I got it on and everything back together. Mark (Arkansas)

I had a simular problem last summer on my front mount 8N. My situation turned out to be that as the motor got under a load, the coil became hot and started to fail. I could resart the tractor after a few minutes and it was fine when I returned to the shredding the problem would repeat. I thought it was lack of fuel under load, but I had a spare coil and for grins, swaped it out. Problem solved.

Thanks, I replaced the coil just recently so I am hoping a carb adjustment is the key. We'll see. Mark

Don't forget the secret fuel screen in the brass elbow inlet to the carb. When this gets about half gunked up, it will let enough gas through to run fine under light load. If you put a load on (i.e. hoggin') it will sputter and die.

It happened to me. Something to check...

Joe

Check point gap.. if it is fine, I'm with enriching the main jet a little.

I had almost exact same problem last summer, would work great first 15 then start to sputter and etc, unless it was quite cool in evenings, it would run for a lot longer without problems. Turned out the points had slipped to almost nothing, heating up expanded points enough that it wouldn't run hardly at all, gapped the points properly, and runs like a top now. That was my solution, don't know if it is your problem.

Joel

Ok, I am a rookie at this so forgive me. Tell me where the points are and what you mean by gapped. Thanks, Mark

I agree with old with the carb setting as a good place to start. A farm I worked on a few years back had a 9N with the same problem. Would run all day, no problems, with the choke on a bit. After a little adjustment of the main jet no more choke needed and it ran much better.

Thanks, I messed with the carb this summer and I think I probably messed it up with the proper richness. I'll adjust and see what happens. Thanks, Mark

Does it help if you choke it when it starts to die?? If choking helps try opening up the main jet a 1/2 turn or so at a time till you find the sweet spot. You might be running a bit to lean.

Thanks, I did mess with the carb last summer and I have no idea what I was doing. Clocwise or counterclockwise on the adjustment. Thanks Mark
