Replacing the spark plugs on my RAV 4 - called dealer - each plug cost over $15.00 called Napa each plug $8.00 - NGK Iridium - pulled the old original plugs NGK Iridium - so were the exact same type.

I dont mind someone making a profit but this is a bit much.

OKDAD said: (quoted from post at 17:57:23 02/14/08) Took my '78 G20 Chevy van in to the local Goodyear store for a front end alignment which was on sale for $29.95. I had just replaced the ball joints and thought I should make sure it was OK. Thing was driving fine.

Service manager says will take about 30 min. 10 min later service tech comes out and says my front wheel bearings are shot and he can't aling it??? They want about $60 for new bearings and seals plus $80 to repack the bearings and install. I tell them I had just done that. They refuse to do the alignment as is. So I take it home after paying them the $29.95 and tighten up the front bearings. Take it back and start over.

This time the service tech comes out and says "Your camber/caster is also off and needs to be set." I say that is part of an alignment job. The manager says "No, that is part of the premium alignment! To do that in addition to setting the toe in will be $69.95."

Now I am so pissed I can't see straight. I tell him to set the toe and get it off the rack. That they are ripping off their customers and I would not return....ever! Never have. Never will.

The local tire dealer did a 4-wheel alignment on my Jeep Cherokee for $69, all items included. My wife's Saturn was the same. Toe in/out, caster, camber, track, all adjusted.

It's a simple matter. If you walk into a restaraunt and see baked fish cost's $39, walk out and find a smaller/family-owned restaraunt that bakes it for $14.

$600 admin fee!!!! Absurd! Several years ago I walked out of a dealership after the "Business Manager" added a $75 documentation fee to the $24K agreed price. I tore the check up in front of him when he refused to wave the fee. I never pay the "additional dealer profit" fees.

It sure is hard to find a good mechanic that charges fair wages. I'm not against them making a living, but I don't want to get ripped off either. Before I moved to FL, I had been using a mechanic in MA for about 10 years, and they were great. Their service manager left and the new 22 year old they hired to replace him was a joke. The first time I called to get new tires on my my 1988 Civic with 250K miles on it, he told me they don't work on cars that old... I said OK and hung up. That weekend I saw the owner of the shop at a club we both belonged to and I told him I was a shame he couldn't work on my Civic any more. Monday morning it was in and had new rubber! Sometimes you just need to talk to the right folks...

The Goodyear place in Rome GA was ripping off a friend of mine, it's a good thing he finally started talking to folks that he knew, about what was going on.

Too bloody right.

To replace the plugs on this RAV 4 you remove a retaining bolt and pull up on a long extended plug cap - you then need a 6inch extension on your socket set to reach the spark plug. All goes well until you try to remove the far right plug and then you have to remove bolts which hold the air filter housing in place to get that out.

took me about 30 mins. Those plugs were actually in pretty damn good shape for nearly 90K - not a speck of oil and clean as a whistle. However, new plugs did fix misfire problem so they might have been breaking down inside?

I would not want to try to do much more than very basic work on the car as everything else seems to have some kind of sensor and wire coming out of it.

We own two toyota my RAV 4 - which for a small car does great in snow and ice conditions and my wife has a Sienna which has been extremely reliable - the engine in that Sienna is incredible - you can hardly tell it is running and that mini van can really move if you give it some gas.

Lee, That sounds about right for the dealer upcharge. You can expect just about any mechanic to up the parts cost 100%. They do this just in case you have one bad and they have to work on it again for free. When I did mechanic work I charged twice what the part cost me and then figured my labor as about equal to the total parts cost. So a ten dollar part I bought cost you twenty bucks and add another twenty bucks for me to put it on. People were tickled to death for me to charge this way. I didn't make a killing but we both were pretty much happy in the end.

Couple a years ago I had my Expedition at the local Goodyear dealer buying a complete new set of Wranglers. These are pretty expensive tires - over $500 for the set plus I had them align it too. They call me a couple hours later to tell me one of my lug studs is stripped (dont know how that happened, came in that way we are sure of it! No, its not the mechanic going crazy with the impact wrench, no way, nah).

Well it just so happens I personally had that same wheel off due to a flat just a few days before and I sure didnt have any trouble with it and I sure didnt goober it up by tightening it back up by hand. They quoted me $25 to change that lug stud. I got mad and pointed out that that part costs about $2 and they already had it apart except maybe two bolts to remove the brake caliper. They wouldnt budge. I told them just put it back together and Ill do it myself! Bought a stud, jacked it up, and replaced it that evening on my driveway in about 20 minutes. When I picked up muy truck I told that Service Manager I thought they were a rip off outfit and would never see any more business from me. He didnt seem to care. Dam poor way to do business in my opinion.

I used to date a girl who drove one of those Chevy Sprint 3 cylinders. Went to put a distributor cap on and it was $40 for one, from Autozone.

I took my son's car to Sears to have it aligned. They said the outer tie rods ends needed to be replaced. Each tie rod was $44 and labor was $80 for the pair. I went to the parts house and bought the tie rods ends for $10.50 each and spent about 40 minutes replacing them. They wanted about $190 for parts and labor. I did it for about $22 total and some of my time. I went back to Sears and complained in front of several waiting customers. They didn't do anything but I felt better.

I am convinced that dealers make no money on new cars until they show up in the shop - then they getcha. I quit going to dealers as soon as the warranties run out.

OK....how about the 600.00 administration fees they charge to sell a car[filling out the title] and the kick backs fees from the manufactures? It is my understanding that the shop is supposed to pay for the business expenses and the car sales is supposed to make the profit.IMHO don b
