Had an 8N that would not smoke blue until after about a minute of warm up time, then it would cloud the yard. Ran great, just smoked. I tore it down, and it was the rings--had about 3/8 inch end gap, and the cylinders were like glass from the oil not getting scraped off. I honed it, ringed it, and sold it--ran great.

If it only smokes when increasing the rpm or increase in throttle it is most likely running too rich like Dell suggested.
May not be rings at all.

I took the engine from a '44 2N and put it on my'47. The tractor it cam off had been sitting for about 20 years. It burned oil so bad it fouled the plugs in about an hour running stright 30 oil(1 & 3). 1 & 3 were the ones that had lower compression than 2 & 4. Smoked terrible (kept the 'skeeters away!) I cleaned the plugs, changed the oil and ran it. After about 10 hrs it fouled the same plugs again and still smoked. Changed the plugs and the oil and I'm still running it 6 months later with no smoke or fouled plugs running 20/50 oil. If the engine hasn't run in a while the rings may be stuck. MMO and running could help it 'heal' like mine did.

Its not a problem as long as it does not foul the spark plugs,,, plugs will tell more than any thing else,,, thats were they live

osweld..... ..what Bruce sez ...BUT... there are 3-colors of "smoke".

1) WHITE smoke at start-up, water/anti-freeze from leaky headgasket or cracked cylinder head
2) BLUEISH smoke at idle, worn rings per Bruce's comments
3) BLACKISH with sudden throttle change at idle, MISS-ADJUSTED carb, TOO RICH

Now that you know that, think about yer smokies some are NO BIG DEAL..... .Dell

Yea, it's probably the rings, but it's not a major problem if it smokes a bit. Just check the oil & make sure the plugs don't foul. But, you really won't be able to tell how far gone it is until you do a compression check. That and oil pressure are the real deciding factors for a rebuild. If I was going to go through all of the time & trouble to pull it down to replace the rings, I'd go ahead & rebuild it completely. If it had decent compression & oil pressure, a little smoke wouldn't bother me that much.

On a flathead it would probably be rings . It could be intake guides but not as likely .
