Hi everyone, I know nothing about fords... but have the chance to buy a 2N for 900 bucks... I have not heard it run, but the guy said on the phone it runs good... It has new rear tires, a trip bucket loader, and I think he said that it had some kind of road gear transmission. The bad thing is when I looked at it the whole thing was covered in rust, it looks like it spent its whole life outside here in Ohio. I'm going to meet this guy when he gets back in town, anything I should look for, listen to, or otherwise be careful of? Any advice appriciated. I'm not much of a mechanic so I don't want to get in over my head.
Thanks,
Rob

Well I was thinking I would buy it just because it seemed like a good deal, I don't really need it, but just got my tax return and figured since I can't save money its better to spend it on something of value, I may just turn around and sell it for a profit, or have the kids at the vocational school paint it for me. My dad saw it too, he said that the loader cylinders had some rust on them like they sat out with the loader up... Thanks for the link to that website it was helpful, if anyone can think of any other advice, or any thing else let me know, if I don't buy it I'll give out that guy's number and location.
Thanks!
Rob

As I read your post the first question that came to mind was "Why do you need a tractor, what are you going to do with it?" The N series was built for a plowing tractor and that is what they do best. Without power steering it can be a handful for working with a loader. Brakes have never been a strong point either. Bush hogging is OK but make sure you use a ORC or that tree or creek bank can get in your way pretty fast. You have been directed to John Smith site and that is about the best place to start to learn about these tractors.
Just my .02. Good luck.

To me rust is OK, at least it's not covered up with new paint. Sounds like a good deal as far as parts , but you need a tractor you can use. There are all kind of things that can go wrong with an old tractor . Smith tractor has a web site with a whole list of stuff to watch out for when buying on of those old Fords . Maybe someone can post the link, I don't remember where I seen it.

Q: "What should I look for when buying a used 8N?"

Robs,

New rear tires = $500.00 Loader = $350.00 That road transmission if good, at least = $800.00

Running engine, no cracks, no smoke = $500.00

You tell me, is it a good deal just in parts?

Mark...

Robs:

At $900.00 a running 2N even without a loader, new rear tires and (most likely) a Sherman OD transmission sounds like a decent deal. The extras make it sound like a great deal.
