Have all 8N literature. Still, 3 questions re preload: (1) Do the 2 brg. retainer slots go on @ 12 & 6 o'clock? (2) In adding/removing shims to check, do I need to tighten/remove all the retainer bolts each time in checking or just 2 or 3 bolts? (3) Plan on doing the preload adjusting with all shims and gaskets dry till I get it right, then permatex both sides of all till final bolt-down. Correct? Thanks again. Angelo

Here is my input:

1 - yes, this is the correct position.

2 - I may be wrong here, but I tighten ALL bolts to get my preload as I try to get it right on the money. Two bolts won't give you a true idea of preload once all bolts are torqued into place. It may take a little more time, but I feel it is worth it.

3 - Why Permatex? If you get the preload perfect and THEN apply the Permatex, you will most assuridly be too tight when you put it back together. Ford did not use sealant between the stock metal shims and it worked just fine. If I am using metal shims, I sandwich them between the moden paper shims to provide this additional sealing benefit - and I don't have to worry about messing up the preload I have worked so hard to get right.

HTH,
Dan

Dan, thanks a lot. I respect your views and have many of your Archives posts. Re 3: Reason I asked is that I saw so much re sealing gaskets & shims in the Archives. This is a new insight. But shouldn't I at least Permatex or brush-on Aviation Sealer the axle housing flange? I'm still a bit confused. Wouldn't all the Preload adjustment "Permatexing" tend to LOOSEN the preload, rather than tightening (i.e., act like putting in another shim)? Or do I still not understand the concept? Angelo

Yep - sorry, adding Permatex will loosen the preload. To me, who likes to get it just right, I would still redo it over and over again :-) Anyway, back to the question - if you use one paper gasket at the brake backing plate to axle housing flange, you will not need any sealant. Paper will swell a bit when it gets wet, and act as a sealer in and of itself. If you are using all metal gaskets, a light sealant on the surface of that gaskets may be in order. Once again though, Ford did not use this when new.
