Cleaning the gas tank

I need to clean my gas tank and was wondering if anyone has had any luck just removing the fuel bowl assembly from the tank and blowing compressed air in the tank with some kind of cleaning solvent in the tank. The air would agitate the cleaning solvent and then drain the tank. My wife says the agitating part should work since I am so good at that part myself.

Thanks in advance,

RD

I'm in the process of cleaning the tank on my '53 JD (I know, bite mah tongue!). After MANY enquirys (sp), I decided to go with diluted muriatic acid (had some in stock). This of course requires removal of the tank (done about a year ago). The process involves removing the outlet (fuel bowl)and installing a plug, then filling (5 litres -mixed 3W to 1Acid)the tank, put the cap on tight and sloshing the heck out of it, then let it sit overnite, re-slosh and drain. This is a very mild solution (slightly stronger than vinegar) so be careful. Amazing how much ap-cray came out! I have flushed the tank and am going to do 1 more application tomorrow. After # 1 the insides are waay cleaner. The last step will be to use some POR-15. Will let you know the final results.
