I have just bought a new genny for my front mount dist. 6v. 8n. (year model??) I took off the wires from the old genny and forgot to note which wires went where. ( Arm, Field, Ground.) The wiring is new and I have a black, red, and white wire setup. Can anyone help me as to which wire goes where and if this is not a common color code can anyone tell me a way to test them to match them up right. I don"t want to put them on wrong and burn something up.

Also, I have been trickle charging the battery when I use the tractor lately and I can use the tractor without the genny wires connected. Does the genny serve any purpose other than recharging the battery? Thanks, Mark (Arkansas)

Fat wire goes from insulated post on back of genny to "ARM" on VR.
One skinny wire goes from insulated post on genny barrel to "FLD" on VR.
Other skinny wire goes from uninsulated post on genny barrel to "GND". Don"t know about colors - not any rigourous standard that I know of.....others may.

Thanks, I think with the info you and other have given me I can figure this thing out without calling a friend. She is really running good now once I replaced crankshaft pulley and I think if I can get these genny wires on I'll be problem free for a while. Mark

Look at your voltage regulator, it should be labeled, and you should be able to see what colored wire goes where.

The process of elimination should work well here too.

The genny does provide one other service, it provides "cranking karma"

You feel really well when it cranks all the time, is a fully self contained machine, and you don't have to provide any external methods.

Besides charging the battery, it provides a means of keeping the fan belt tight on fan/water pump.
Go to the voltage regulator and look at the wires & terminal markings there (sometimes on cover & sometimes tiny little letters hidden by wire lugs/screws on reg terminals). At that point observe colors & wire gauge/size.

If you get her started up and the ammeter pegs out at 30A, check to make sure you didnt swap FLD and GRND.
