Replaced L. axle, shaft; used same brg. & cup. Did L.side OK. Put gskt. on trumpet flange + metal shim inside backing plate. (Had 2 metal shims inside backing plate + gskt.) To the R. side to check preload. Put on only backing plate, brg. retainer w/cup, + brake support plate. Snugged lightly 4 inside & outside short bolts only. Tried hand turning shaft--NO GO! (Before started R. side, could turn axles easily--rotated opposite directions.) Noticed backing plate not tight, but when lightly tighten short bolts get axle lock-up. Believe I'm tightening shafts against each other. Thinking of one shim or more if needed on right side (already had put gskt. on flange]. If that frees it up and I get no or slight in-and-out w/axle shaft would it be OK to button up & forget the "same direction/opposite direction" spot which after many attempts I don't find. If bolts loosened just enough to allow turning it's always in opposite directions. Disclaimer: To be done at my own risk. Thanks again. Angelo

I agree with Dan.. sounds like more shims are needed for more clearance/less pre-load..

My recommendation would be that since you say:

Replaced L. axle, shaft; used same brg. & cup.

Then the right side is still right, put it back like it was to start with, after loosening the left side back up.

Put the right side, that is original back like it was.

Then shim the left side to fit.

You need more shims on the right side, plain and simple. I usually start out with three on the first side, and have used up to six on the opposite side before I got the preload correct. If you run it too tight you will tear it up and do parts like make the cup spin in its bore and destroy that bearing retainer.

Get more shims.

It has been awhile since I did what you are doing, but it sounds like you have the transmission in gear. If that is the case, then you will not be able to turn either wheel when the axles are tight up against each other. You need to be in neutral to see both wheels turn in same direction. When axles not locked to each other, then the differential function can work and you see them turn in opposite directions. That's the way I remember it.

No, transmission was in neutral. Learned that from the Archives. But thanks, JMOR. Angelo
