Hi All---got to take apart an old TSX 241 that came off of a 49 8N. Lots of rust in the housing and found a problem with this--
third party image

The idle jet is jimmied up and I can"t get a screw driver on it. Any ideas on how to remove it w/o wrecking the carb?

Thanks, Tim

Tim;

I didn't see a re-post from you, on how the carb. rebuild turned out!!??

Hope all went well. Did you test the carb. on your "N", for good operation and settings???

If ya decide to sell that carb., I might be interested, if ya don't want too much!!!!! Always looking for good deals on M/S 241 B's, ya know.

Post back and let me know how it went for ya.

Gary :)

Thanks to all for your comments. Primary diagnosed problem was worn throttle shaft allowing air to get in---I will try to heat and tap another screwdriver in the jet to remove it.

If that doesn"t work, I will make sure the passage is clear and put it back together. If I sell the carb after rebuild, I will just let the buyer know that the jet works, but just looks like --LL.

Tim

Tim;

What concerns me when I see those like that, is, how much brass went down in the jet passage.!!!!??? So... what I do is , take a small sharp bladed screwdriver and make another driver slot on the top of the jet. The jet is all brass and will cut pretty easy. Then after the cut is made, take a screwdriver that fits the cut, tap straight down on it to square it, and push down firmly and unscrew the jet.

OR.....as every one else, except G..P, said, leave it alone and take yer chance. I always try to remove all three jets, just to be sure of what is below them.

JMHO!!!

Good luck!!!

BTW: That jet come out at an angle, so ,unscrew it evenly.

Gary :)

Up to you but a quick heating with a fine tip torch will free it up and it will easily come out. Problem may lay below in that passages may be clogged or obstructed.

Tim, I've heard of heating and special gun smithing screwdrivers that do not have typical wedge shape to help remove these. Others resort to drilling with a size to just touch threads & then peal out the remaining brass from between the casting threads.

For myself, unless the orifice size is somehow damaged, I would leave well enough alone. There is nothing behind it other than a passage larger than the jet orifice, so a copper wire, carb cleaner, compressed air should ensure a clear path thru it all the way to the two holes (above & below throttle plate) in the carb throat.

Mine has always looked like that (as long as i have had it).

I thought quite a bit about it years ago, and decided the hole in it was the right size, and there were no obstructions in it...

Yep, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Still like that, and still runs just fine.
