I have three old FORD tractors: 8N,640,& a 841. They have various length of travel until I get some braking effect. In one case(8N) when I apply them they CLUNK and then grab. Can I adjust them thru the hole in the housing with a tool? or perhaps a flat screw driver? With any luck maby the screw adjust will not be rusted? Does it usually work or rusted beyond operation?? any ideas/ comments are welcomed. My 2nd question is the use in the tractors of 3 gallon can of FORD HYD OIL #'S : M-2C41-A & M-2C53-A in sealed Metal cans by FORD??. Are these old #'S ??. The Ford tractor people I talked to said just buy the new hyd oil @ $26.. a can but I have acquired 15 gallons at a farm sale for the price of just the steel can labeled " FORD" ?? OK to Use in Tranmission/ Hydraulic System?? THANK YOU for your help. Electrical answers to any of your ?'S are my speciality.

As bruce said.. they got star wheel adjusters.. jack up a wheel, and adjust till it just grabs when you spin the wheel by hand.. then back it off a hair.. do other side. Flat blade screw driver did mine fine.

I'd sell that oil to a collector and then buy either UTF oil for the hundred series units.. or the 90wt gl1-3 oil for the 8n.. etc.

Phillip,
I'm not sure what that oil is supposed to go into.
If the oil is in sealed cans and has original ford label etc I would sell them on Ebay.
I'll bet you could make enough to buy NEW oil for your tractor from the dealer.

I don't own anything but 8N's, so maybe some other folks can answer your questions about the other models.

Regarding the type of fluid to use, check out tips 3 & 4 at the link below.

Regarding brakes, yes, they are easily adjustable. I still have my 1960's brake 'spoon', but a flat blade screwdiver will work.

You might want to give some thought as to why they grab. Got oil on the backing plate? If so, the seals are bad & the tranny fluid is leaking into the drums.
