I'm new here, so bear with me...I have a '51 8N in wonderful shape. Sometimes, ONLY when in reverse, the left brake locks up. It will usually release if I roll forward a couple of feet. It occurs without warning. No brake problems at all in forward gears. This did not happen until I re-did the brake shoes. I believe (after multiple re-checks in the manual) that I reassembled the pads, springs, hooks and adjuster parts correctly. Thinking the new pads might be a touch thick, I ground them down some. This only helped briefly. Based upon the observed wear pattern, the pads are catching on the leading edge. Never any problems with the right side. Anyone have ideas? My mechanic has tried without luck (he's $50 richer). Thank you.

Back about 40 years ago I was visiting with an old mechanic friend of mine and saw that he was filing down the leading edges of his new brake shoes. I asked him why and he told me that was a sure fire way to prevent them from grabbing. It was a 55 Chev he was working on. I've tried it if the brakes shoes grabbed and it works. Does not make sence to me but it does work. I don't know why????? ????? ????? ????? ?????

Most N brakes will apply if you pull up on the petal,,, sometimes by accident while back'n my leg will pull up on the pedal and apply the brake,,, any time i replace brakes they git a good break in run,,, cars git 7 to 10 stops from 35 down to 5MPH i do'em in sequence,,, On a N I stand on the pedal while drive'n,,, git'em hotter than forty hell,,, let'em cool and re adjust,,, never had a problem,,, well almost never,,, one thing I have had to do was back off on the adjuster a little more than I wanted to,,, run the tractor some and sneak up on the adjustment a little at a time till after some use got the brake pedal I wanted,,, new shoes and full adjustment has been sorta a problem so run'em a tad on the loose side till they seat in good

Most brakes are extremely aggressive cold and have absorbed moisture,,, you mite try and use the brakes forward a few times,,, if it really helps then i would run it till you ware'em a little and git a glaze on'em,,, problem mite go away

Then again thay mite have some contamination on'em like grease,,, problem will never go away

Not to throw gas on the fire...but can anyone think of why this only happens on the left side? Since I re-did brake shoes on both sides, wouldn't you think that both sides would be affected? Thank you for all the insight so far.

I had the same problem only going foreward. Camfering is what finally fixed my problem, but I had to camfer twice. Finally took a right angle grinder and angled off about 1/4" on both edges and angled off about 1 1/2" front and back. I had taking a file previous and camfered a little, but after about 2 years and pulling the wheels off numerous times, this overkill angling took care of my problem.

Dunk hit it - the aftermarket brake pads need an andgle on the leading edge of the top of the pad where it meets the drum. Before I install my new pads, I don a good dust mask and file the edges with a flat file to an angle to prevent this. Not sure if brake pads still use asbestos, but I don't want to take a chance breathing this dust.

Something seems to ring a bell about grinding the leading edge down a bit on an angle, but I have no idea where I am coming up with that from.

So don't hold it as good information.
