What would be the average price for a decent original?

GB was telling me one time they were kinda rare.

I'm gonna find me an old that I know is bad just to tinker with. I'm curious as to how they come apart/go back together. Surely theres a way to safely disassemble it but if it is pressed together it may be tough to do.

I have have the original loop style on my 1940 N and am curious to see if it still functions ok once I get everything back together.
I do still have my original oil gauge, but unfortunately cracked the glass in it when I removed it to sandblast/re-paint the dash. I bought a repop oil gauge but am ultimately hoping I can somehow find a new piece of glass for the original and get it repaired.

Anyone have suggestions on that??

Just series a battery, light bulb, ammeter together & read the amperes being drawn by the bulb. Want more amps? Use a headlight instead of a tail light.

You got it ED.!!!! Then start the "N" to see if it is reading right. Some of them read backwards, so ya have to switch the wires on them. That's all there is to it. That and get lucky enough to buy one that works from the land of almost right.!!!!! :lol:

So, if you want to replace a loop style with a post style, howdya do it? Cut the wire that goes through the loop, and hook up to the two posts?

What was the years they were used? Yours is a 44 isn't it? Mines a 52 & looks to be original but maybe not. Then my 49 has the terminals.

A fellow who seems to have a lot of historic knowledge of Ns (don b.) said that the first 4000 tractors built used a post type ammeter, but all the following Ns used the loop style. My 1950 8N has it's original loop type that still functions.

Doesn't get rained on, been indoors most of it's life.

Departing from fact at this point, which will probably bring some facts out of the wood work, I t-h-i-n-k that the loop may have continued thru the NAA, but it looks like that the hundred series didn't have an ammeter at all.

I'm betting somebody will chime in, set me straight, and put some additional info out here.

I'm not sure when they quit making those. Yep, mine is a 44 2N. I think, it is safe to say that if your gauge is the induction type amp. gauge, then it would be an orig.. The oil gauge is another story. The only way I know to tell if the oil gauge is orig., is the oil gauge is flater than the newer type and only came with the black bezel. Could be wrong though.!!!!!

jon;

Ya didn't believe me, huh??? :lol: I'm still looking for a rebuilder for mine!! So far they are charging too much, for what I can afford to pay. :shock:
I have the orig. set, oil and amp, that came off my 2N, and thought about getting them re-done, to re-install. Not for orig. sake, but just to say I have em'.!!!! 8) Goofy, ain't I ?????
