Drained, cleaned and refilled Hdy Fluid on my 1948 8N. I did not have enough ML1 90 and did not want to buy another 5 gallons, I got one gallon of ML1 140 and added about 2 quarts to bring the level up to the inspection plate bottom bolt hole. This has worked OK but the lift is not as responsive as it had been before. I would like to lower the viscosity and am asking if adding a quart of MMM or ATF would cause any harm or is there another additive I could use. Thanks in advance...Thumbs

Yep. In those temps, you don't have a viscosity problem.

I would not add anything (MMM, ATF, Motor Oil) to the sump that is not intended for use as an EP gear oil. I'd suggest using a multi-grade gear oil (80W90) if you feel the need for "thinning" the oil. And of course there's always UTF.

What makes you think it's not as responsive as it SHOULD be? (as opposed to as responsive as it USED to be.) Perhaps the previous fluid was low viscosity. Perhaps there's another issue besides viscosity.
What is the ambient temperature where you are located?

(Otherwise, you could simply drain some out, and add some NON-detergent, NON-additive 30 wt motor oil.)

Thanks gahor...Looks like the 30 wt is the best controlled way to go as I can slowly add until I get the response that it had previously. The tractor is operated in the 70 to 100 ambient temp range. Thanks again...Thumbs

Two quarts of 140 in 70 to 100 ambeint should have little or no effect on the lift.

Try pushing down slightly on the little mode lever while the lift is coming up. If this speeds it up significantly the lift probably needs adjusting.

Thanks, I'll give that a try before doing anything else. I was thinking along the line gahor mentioned about perhaps there had been something in it other than ML1 90 before I changed it. .....Thumbs
