I'm buying some spare parts from a local guy parting out a 47 8N.

He has a tire (90% tread and no weather checking) new tube, and rim with no rust that I am interested in. He wants $75 for the package.
The problem is that the tire, tube and rim are not together.
How hard is it to mount a tractor tire? I've never mounted anything larger than a riding mower tire, and that went fine.
None of the local tire shops will talk to me about mounting a tractor tire. Should this tell me something?

This seems like a good deal to me. How does it sound to you guys? I just want this as a spare, and I can't justify the cost of a new one for a spare.

Anyone else out there in the area of North Central FL have any parts they want me to get pictures of?
Thanks,

TooTall

I have worked in a tire shop selling auto and farm tires for 20 years. Tractor tires are not to bad to change if you have the right tools. Take it to someone who knows. The 8n tractor tires are 10x28 but tire makers changed that same tire to 11.2x28 which means 10" wide tire on 28" rim. Its always good to ask if you don't know.

Darn good price, I'd say. I mount and dismount all my tires on 6 vehicles. Two spring leaves that my dad had. Went to Walmart one day, bought 2 tires, went outside pried them on. Came inside asked lady if I could have some air, please. She said "heck, you aren't supposed to use our machine." Had to show her to convince her that I did it by hand. What a HOOT! What you are doin' mounting is the easy part. Breakdown is a little more strain.

How do you balance your tires ? I have installed tires and not balanced them only to get my teeth shaken out - ken(Ark)

Clean the rim good and get some paint on it . If you ever have to take the tire off of the rim you will be happy to find that the tire comes off pretty easy . Rusty rims make it hard to remove a tire .

And like it has been mentioned a few times already , check the tube for leaks before you install it .

This may be stupid too??? in reply to Too Tall, 02-25-2008 09:06:14
Since it is a "spare", if you mount it now, can you use it as either a left or right??? If not, maybe you should wait till you need it.

I would no more have someone mount my tire than I would have someone change the oil in my tractor.
Putting a rear tire onto the rim is a piece of cake.
I have one tire iron and a Wonder bar (flat pry bar) that I use.
Use plenty of dish soap, get one side on. put the tube in then get the other side on.
DON'T PINCH THE TUBE WITH YOUR TIRE IRONS
As for demounting the tires I always use my pickup. Put it in 4WD and drive the front PU tire onto the tractor tire as it's laying flat.
Drive right along the rim. Might take a couple of trys but they always come off.
I changed all four tires on a tractor this fall.
Took a couple of hours start to finish.
$75 for a good tire, tube and rim is a bargain.

The principle is the same. Some will say you need two good, thin and strong at the business end, tire irons. I get by with one and a big screwdriver as the place holder. Soapy water on the bead for lubrication.

Hope you have an air compressor, test tube before installing, etc.

The rear tires on a N can be a bugger to break down, requiring much work and different tool(s), but you don't have that problem.

I enjoy a good workout, and in the last few years installed tires on my vehicles with some satisfaction.

Good deal - buy it. As far as having it mounted, find a business in your area that repairs heavy equipment (skidders, backhoes, etc.) They might do it. If not, they can tell you where they have tires changed. I've done it myself and will tell you - considering the low cost, you don't want to go there.

There's no such thing as a stoopid tire question. Stoopid tires never ask questons. They are too stoopid to even get on their rims themselves. They are too stoopid to be taught by you and me.
Experienced tire teachers charge for the lessons and then when you find you've bought a tire too stoopid to hold air, they'll charge you to teach it to get back off the rim too!
I never take my eggs to the restaraunt and ask them to fry them for me. I always buy my eggs from the restaraunt. That way, if there's a problem, they are responsible for making it right, and it doesn't cost me a penny more.

Old (or anyone)

I'm almost positive I have 11.2 X 28 tires on my 8N now.
You mentioned a 12.4X28 was that just an example, or am I running the wrong size?
I think the originals were something like 10X28, and then they changed the way tires were measured... Or am I completely off my rocker?

Any problems running 11.2X28 tires on an 8N?

Thanks,

TooTall

Just an example. I have both 11.2 and 12.4 on my 8Ns so I just used a number I knew I had on my tractor. Either way an 11.2 will sell for around $100 as will the 12.4 I said.

too tall..... ..the OEM ag-bar tire was 10-28. Governmental bureaucrats told tire manufacturers "YOU LIE", re-measure yer tires our way....or else. So they did and re-labeled 10-28 as 11.2-28. Simple, eh?

BUY the tire, as described, GOOD DEAL..... Dell

TT:

His price sounds like a GREAT deal.

Tractor tires are relatively esy to mount, though not always easy to dismount.

Generally, larger diameter tires mount easier than smaller ones.

If you can mount a lawnmower tire you can mount a 28" tire.

Shoot in my area just the tire would sell for more then that, if its say a 12.4X28. The tube about $20 and the rim another $75-100 so yep good deal for the combo. As far as mounting a tire if you don't have the correct tools forget doing it your self. Just the tools you need will cost you as much as what your paying for the tire etc. I would just take it in and have it mounted. Should cost around $25 give or take a few bucks

No - none of the local tire shops sell tractor tires.

There is a shop about 40 miles away that sell truck and tractor tires. I've been told they will do it.
I just wasn't sure if this was a job I could do myself or if it were better to pay someone else with the right tools to do it.
Thanks

With the deal you got, spend the extra few dollars and have the tire mounted. Unlike a lawn mower tire, if you pinch the tube you'll have to start all over. Not worth the agravation.

Do these local tire shops sell tractor tires? Shops that just do automotive tires probably don't have the equipment to do agro tires. If that is the case find a tire shop that does tractor tires.

That sounds like a good deal for a spare tire. You could go to your Co-op or ask someone at the feed store or a local farmer where to get it mounted. I don't think you would want to do it yourself.
