How full do I fill the gear box on '51 8N?? One place I read says a pipe plug on the left, another says on the right, I have neither. The 2 bolt holes where the battery box etc. mount do not go through inside the gear box. One place I read said to pour the oil down the steering wheel shaft - but how do I know when it is full? I have 2 bolts and plates on each side that hold the backlash adjustment screws. Do I remove one of those and fill to that level -- if so which one? I sure appreciate your help.

Here's a pic of the earlier style 8N steering gear assembly. Note the oil fill hole plug (designated "A" in the picture). If you don't have this, you'll use Don B's method as described below.

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed

Thanks for the picture. Mine don't look much like that. I'll use that top bolt as suggested before and think it will work ok.

I have the steering gear box off now. Showed it to a neighbor -- no plugs on the sides. There is kind of a round casting bump on the side but it is not drilled out or tapped or anything. I guess this is an 8N gear box. I may have to go to a dealer and ask.

Here's a pic of the gear box on my 50 8n, if you look real hard you can just see the edge of the pipe plug, it sounds like yours doesn't have this plug but the boss is there, It looks to me that the plug is about the same height as the top bolt on the side cover, maybe fill your box through that top hole till the oil runs out ??

hope this helps

later,dave

GREAT. Thanks for the picture. That is about the place where I have a round casting boss! So I'll try using the upper bolt on the side cover. Sure appreciate the help!

On the right side just above the steering arm their should be a npt plug with a square head. I fill my 49 with an oil can with the correct weight of gear lube till it runs out the plug hole. Yours should be the same, although you probably have the later model adjustible gearbox.
