I need to remove rust from a few parts on my 8N (rims, fenders, and hub). Is sand blasting the best way to do this? I realize I'll need to repaint after blasting :-)

If sand blasting is the answer, is a small blaster like this one apropriatly sized for small jobs like I mentioned?

Is a 20oz hopper large enough that I won't need to fill it 100 times for a fender?
Can I make a tent to contain the media out of a tarp?
Is there a better way to contain the media?
Can the media be reused if collected?
Thanks,

TooTall

If this is a one time thing or so you can get a siphon feed tube type at any farm fleet store for ten-twelve dollars. You can then insert it into a five gallon bucket of sand or a thirty gallon plastic jug. You are in pretty good shape overall then. Be sure to screen your sand if reusing, and dry summer days are worth waiting for, as moisture is trouble for all blasters.

I live eight miles from a silica mine, and alot of old timers died early in life. I guess I can't even think of a old one left.

I sandblasted all of my sheet metal myself. used a 100lb capacity pressure pot with a 6hp, 20 gallon compressor.

TT:

Though sandblasting is the most effective and fastest way to remove rust prior to priming, you will need a much bigger sand blasting outfit in order to accomplish much.

You will also need a good compressor. About 5HP (a real 5 HP electric) is about the minimum necessary to do much sandblasting work.

Don't waste your time on that little hopper. I use about 100 lbs. of sand doing my fenders and hood - and recycle the sand even.

Lotsa people sandblast.. i don't.. yes.. if you can collect your media in a environment where it is not getting contaminated.. especially by wires from wire wheels.. then yeah you can re-use it.

Wear a good respirator or you can get silicosis..

Most of us just use wire wheels on an angle grinder.. or flap discs.. or 3M type surfacing discs.. or good old fashioned sand paper and a block or hand for those of us that are cheap.

And yeah.. I imagine you will be refilling that baby alot!
