I bought a '48 8n about a year ago and was wondering if there was ever a locking differential made for these tractors. If not is there a way to make it a locking diff with out welding the spiders together.

Works fine on mine, I can clamp down on the wheel that's spinning and transfer the power to the other with little trouble.

Yes but a true differential lock will lock the differential solid and apply power to BOTH wheels equally. The steering brakes are a crude approximation.

Richard:

Ford Ns were never offered with a locking differential but you can accomplish nearly the same effect with the turning brakes.
