after buying the 8n which as been converted to a 12v system by previous owner I found it has quite a few wires that seems to be for no other purpose but to go absolutly no were. so now I am putting a new 12v coil on and was wondering what kind of resistor I need in the line and how many amps I need at the coil.since I am electically challenged pictures would be greatly appreciated

USE

OEM ballast resistor and a .8 ohm resistor,,, you are looking for 3 to 4 amps points closed ignition switch on ,,,, battery voltage around 13.5 to 14.5Vs

Or look for 7.5 to 8.5Vs points closed ignition switch on and battery voltage 13.5 to 14.5

all checks should b preformed with a charger on the battery to get the battery voltage were its at when the battery and charging system are at in a running condition

It does not matter what series you install the resistors in,,, either can b in front of the other.... or just use this combination it should give good service with no checks

Front or side distributor?

The second article at the link below will help you sort out the resistor questions. If it is a front distributor, beware that the resistance values of the new "12v" coils vary all over the chart.

With the "12-Volt" square can coils being sold today, guys are having good luck using JUST the OEM-type ballast resistor cleverly hidden behind the dash that would have originally been used when the tractor was new and 6-Volt.

So with a coil I bought when I installed 12 Volt system about 3 years ago should I be using the original ballast resistor instead of Dell's trick resistor....Currently I am running just Dell's resistor setup and a 12V square coil. Please advise.

There IS an answer, IF you use an ammeter as Hobo explains in his post. It's hard to convince folks to do that, though!

HOWEVER, since your's has run as long as it has, your primary current MUST be within reason, since you are not complaining about coil or breaker point problems.

Actually it probably has maybe 7-8 hours run time. I don't use it. It is just a toy and money pit. As far as working, I used it one time for maybe an hour with a 5' finish mower. I am measuring about 7.5 volts to the top of the coil, so looks like I am O.K. according to Hobo's post.
