I have an 8N I just got, trying to find out what year it is. the serial no. is 437383 which should make it a 1953, but it has an hour meter techometer on it, I thought that did not start until 1954. thanks

thanks for all the help. I made a mistake on the serial no. on my 8N. I should have said the serial no. 437383 makes it a 1951. it has a 3J or 31 before the serial no. does anybody know what that is for?

J.W.----if you don"t mind scratching any paint up, take a wire brush and lightly try to remove any rust and old paint.

In front of the 8 and after the last number, you should see either a "star" or a "diamond".

You can see the "star" on my 1949 pretty easy.

The star indicated the engine had .040" steel cylinder sleeves.

If you have identified your serial number correctly, you should have "diamonds" in front of the 8 and behind the last number.

The diamond indicates the engine had .090" cast iron cylinder sleeves. Sometime after serial #433...

Just some trivia----probably doesn"t matter much to your N which sleeves are in it---they may have been changed anyhow somewhere along the line.

Here is the serial number on my 1948 8N trailer queen. It is a little easier to see.

That is not a "3J" or "3I" - it is a weakly stamped "8N".

8Ns where made from 1948 to 1952, in 1953 the Jubilee came out and in 1954 the NAA came out. Jubilee and NAA are almost the same tractor other then the emblem up front. If it is in fact a 1953 tractor the engine will have a valve in head engine instead of the flat head that the N series had

The tach started in 1950.
