With out going into too much detail, I meessed up my steering timing today on the left (passenger side of a car). The manual makes it appear to be an easy fix, however when I move the left side all the way up the right side hits the starter housing. If I go the opposite direction both stop prior to the left side hiting the air cleaner.

The manual gives a good description of what should happen and how to reset the timing. It isn't doing what it describes.

I appreciate any suggestions that you have.

I tried to re-sync mine as described... disconnecting drag links and moving to un-mesh.... I couldn't get mind to un-mesh from the pinion gear. it was like they reached a limit but wouldn't go far enough to come apart from the pinion gear on the steering shaft.

I've reserved myself to the fact I'm going to have to take the dash apart again and work on it that way.

I did try adjusting mine with the drag link adjustments and was able to get everything straight at one point. But I have a little bit of play. I know the pinion gear and the sector gears are in good shape. i'm thinking maybe one or both of my outer thrust washers is not thick enough to keep the sectors tight enough together. Or maybe the inner thrust washer is too thick and is keeping the sectors further apart than they should be.
:idea: :idea: I wonder if when I put it back togther I switched one of the outers with the inner. :idea: :idea:
maybe that's it.... :shock: crap that means I'll have to take the dash apart to check.

Pinche I think you are all turned around!You say(on the left (passenger side of a car).(however when I move the left side all the way up the right side hits the starter housing.)Now for your onfo the starter is on the LEFT side.and the air cleaner is on the right side.To synchronize the gears without removing the steering housing,disconnect (both) drag link arms and move left (starter side) arm rearward as far as possible,and the right (carb side) arm forward (fan) to unmesh the gears.(It your arm hits on the air cleaner you may have to remove it to give the arm some clearence).Re-engage both sectors and set then so they are slightly rearward when arms are straight across from each other.

Yea, the book confused the heck out of me. For what ever reason it is stopping prior to hitting the air cleaner. Sounds much better though: Starter side / Carb side.

You have gotten if off a tooth or two.Have to take it apart and try it again.Check that its right before bolting it all back up this time.

In know it is off. The question is the manual describes moving the left all the way back and the right all the way foward to re-sync. This is suppose to be acheived with out disasembling the gear box, how ever there are limits to the movements as I dercribed previously.

I have readjusted mine. Jack up the front and do as the book says. You may have to remove the steering arms if they hit. These old steering gears do wear out and need to be replaced. I am on my third set of gears in 26 years of use/abuse, I keep my eye out on ebay for the gears and buy when cheap. I have two sets of used gears in stock. Be prepared! Lots Of Luck Joe

I removed both steering rods leaving the arms going into the gear box. When I do as the book says the driver side arm hits the housing where the started plugs in. When I go the opposite direction it stops on its own.
