I can feel and hear a leak from the block/exhaust manifold junction, at the back end of the engine. Will I hurt the engine by running it this way (toast a valve or anything?) til I can get a gasket? What else should I do while I have the manifold and carb off (I'm assuming I can take them off as a unit)? Thanks.

I thought mine was a bad gasket but turned out the manifold had a crack in it back there. Hope your luck's better than mine!

There are better products than 'JB' (hey it's good stuff), but check with your auto supply store for 'Hi-temp' epoxy repair goop, and it should be a one-time deal.

I used Permatex Ultra copper to fix my exhaust erosion. 2 light applications did it for me. 5 years or so at this point.
HTh.....good luck.....don t. .....

Ditto what the others said.. block erosion will get worse and worse untill you fix it.

I agree with Dan. Fix it now. Takes an hour max. Never did like the notion of fixing my tractors with duct tape, pucky or glue.
When you take the manifold off keep it upright so the junk in the sediment bowl doesn't booger up your carb.

It will erode the block as has been said - but you should know it will erode it very quickly and will turn from a light JB Weld fix to a major pain building up the surface to flush again quicker than you can immagine. I just spent several days building up this area on my 1939 9N I am working on that was severely eroded down - I would have much prefered to just replace the gasket - a 15 minute job.

Nah, be alright for a while. You might find that the block has been eroded by the leak. If it has cut a channel then clean it up real good and fill the grove with JB Weld. Mine has lasted 3 years like that. When it goes, I'll just do it again.

The worst that will happen is some erosion of the block and/or manifold surfaces in the area of the leak.

The valves will just keep on doing what they always do!
