'49 8N, needs brake work (and hence rear seals)

I've finaly got a weekend to tackle this and have been reading up in the archives (where else).

My question is about inner seals. Tractor is pre inner seal but I see many references to making a fix involving toilet tank washers, silcone caulk, teflon tape and lots of axle grease.

Is the collective wisdom to do this or just leave it as designed and carefully fix the outer seals. I have "heard" the importance of checking the hubs are tight!! I will do that first!!!!

Thanks

The '49 8n I am working on does not have inner seals. I am following the instructions on John's site to replace the outer seals, bearings, and brakes. They should last longer than me!

Do it right. Follow the advice on John Smith"s website & the I&T manual & it will last another 50 years. The inner seal was added on later model 8N"s; what is the serial number of your N? I don"t think the 49 had an inner seal, but tell us your seial # and someone will let you know for sure. And, like Dunk sez, if you have a bad hub, seal replacement won"t solve the problem.

Phil, the illusive "secret" to my 49 8N rear seal leak fix was new hubs, mine were worn out, they are still as they would have came from the factory otherwise.

John Smith has a very good page on this, that would be worth your time also.
