I'm really happy to see the parts for this tractor are amazingly inexpensive - but then my last restore job was on an older Honda ATV.
- I'm seeing a hand-crank on ebay for 8n tractors, is the 8N configured for a hand-crank somewhere?
- Which manuals do I need? I assume the owners and service manual are required, but is there another must-have? - It doesn't look like the 1948 8N had any badges on the front/grill at all, is this true?
- I see recommendations for which modern hydro/tranny/diff lube to use, what about motor oil? Grease? I don't mind spending extra for the "right" stuff.
- If the paint IS original, is it a bad idea to repaint it even if I use the original colors?

I'll have a slew of new pics and questions once I get the thing in my shop and cleaned up.

Ditto waht the others said..

front nose did have a ford badge.

pick oil based on pressure and temps

hydro fluid can be modern UTF or older gl1-3 90wt gear oil.. OR gl4/5 if it is wellow metal safe. ( preferable )

Don't forget to lube the steering box

al437 plugs and metal core wires

points gap on front mount is .015

spark plug gap is .025

a drop of oil under the genny bushing spring loded cover on the end plate will make it smile.

do get an owners and service manual.. and a parts manual if ya got another 20$ left over... exploded diagrams help you figure out how to assemble / disassemble parts.. plus gives you parts numbers and bolt thread pitch.. etc.

here's some part numbers to help with tuneup:
Front Mount distributor... Points:
NAPA #CS35
Standard Ignition Blue Streak #FD-6769X (Premium) Condensor:
NAPA #FA200
Standard Ignition #FD-71 Rotor:
NAPA #FA300
Standard Ignition #FD-104 Distributor Cap:
NAPA #FA350
Standard Ignition #FD-126

Congrats on your purchase! I am no guru, but there are many online sites to purchase parts (like this one) but also your NH dealer has parts too. It is a fun project - bought my 8N during college. Did a rebuild. Am 24 now and still love it!

Should have added that this site has exploded views and part numbers. I printed everything out for reference on my 8N David.

Yep, you can use a hand crank on your 8N if no one has changed the pulley. And, you can also break your wrist if you do it wrong! That's a major reason starters were put on cars!

Tip # 39 at the link below will tell you about manuals.

Yea, it had the emblem on the hood, just above the grill.

Regarding oil, pick the weight of the oil by the condition of the engine (oil pressure) & the outside temperature. Many folks use 30w detergent all year. A worn engine with multi-vis oil may lose it's oil pump prime if it sets a while. Many use 10w30 or 40. Some like the newer diesel rated oil because of the additives for the flat tappets. (I'm not convinced that my 2400 rpm N engine needs the same oil as my 65 Mustang did) Anyway, IMHO, use a detergent oil. Increase the weight if the engine has low oil pressure. If it gets infrequent use, stick w/ straight weight.

As to paint, well, that really is personal choice. I like mine original w/ some exceptions. I prefer the manifold black & I like a natural finish on the carb, linkage & the oil lines, and all the brass fittings. But, that's just me.
