Is there a way to drill 2-4 inch holes in 2 feet of limestone with a PHD on the 8N? I have a lot of fence posts to put in and the PHD's will drill in soil but I only have 6-12 inches of dirt before I hit the Limestone. I have seen a rock drill that runs off a big air compressor but I do not have one. Thanks.
Alex

Drilling with a PhD is not recommended. They are somewhat fragile and brittle and they really don't like it at all. OSHA does not recommend this either. In general, most people with PhD's are almost completely useless at anything, much less, drilling holes in rock.

PS. I apologize for such a worthless answer, but then I have a PhD :)

PhD; now that's one of the better answers I've seen here! In Tennessee, my land is almost all solid rock. Digging postholes is a chore and I have ruined numerous augers. Rent an air hammer, it's tuff work but it works.

You can make a PHD that will drill rock. It may cost some to have it made, but a guy i know made one out of a 6 or 8 inch pipe. Had it welded to fit on like the auger and then had harden teeth welded around the bottom of the pipe. he had to put a handle going off the back of the PHD so he could put presure on it to bit into the limestone. It work real good, didn't take long to go thru 12 inches. He had holes drilled in the pipe so he could pry the stone out of the pipe.

hope this helps or gives you some idea as what to do.

There was an article in the Courier Journal a year or two back that described what happened to a woman who stood on the PHD while her husband ran the tractor. She did not survive. He should have known better. (Her too).

Many years ago my brother also stood on the back of a post hole digger to help get it in the ground. He had on a loose jacket and it got caught in the power take off and pulled him in and wound the coat up tight and he ended up with his feet straight up in the air after the tractor stalled. It was a To 20 and luckily it was running real slow or he would have been history. He wasn't even hurt after he finally got unwound.

Once knew a lady who was running a 16" Toro Snow thrower, the kind with the rubber paddles, while wearing a long scarf.
She bent over the snow intake for some reason and the little machine climbed right up the scarf to her face and stalled.
Knocked her out and loosened some teeth in addition to beating the puddin' out of her face.
Somebody saw it happen and said she was on the way down when the machine met her halfway up.
Ouch.

He was lucky. Cornpickers, snowblowers and cotter pins on an unguarded shaft will eat you alive. We had a man a while back who baled himself up in a big round baler. While doing the police report they found out the baler was stolen. Justice or what?
