I have two questions concerning my 8N.First,the
tractor will try and quit running will I give a
little more gas,and I have to push the clutch in
about half way and stop for the engine to come back to full power, the tractor has a front mount
distributor and has been converted to a 12V system. Please let me know what to check with this
problem.
The second problem is I wanted to purchase a wiring harness, some equipment places, tell me the
wiring harness is for the orginal 6V tractors, and
would be of any use on a tractor that has been
converted to a 12V system.Any truth to this? I am
in need of a new wiring job.Can someone supply
a part number and place to buy the harness.

Art..... ..as the guys say, check yer BIG under the carb drain bolt for WATER in yer carb. Letter flow and catch in GLASS quart mason jar. Why? so you can visually verify clean gas or cloudy watered gas. It may haffta settle overnite to separate out the water in bottom of jar. Surprizingly enuff, water will "burn" in yer HOT engine creating invisible "steam". Just don't have the power of real gasoline.

Iff'n gasoline is clean, then ENRICH yer carb down-pointing MAINJET 1/8-turn CCW. Don't mucka'round with yer side-pointing idlemix jet.

Iff'n that don't doo-itt. Check yer sparkie strength with a calibrated sparkie checker made from enny ol'sparkie by bending the side electrode out for a full 3/16in gap. Clamp the metal shell to convenient bracket and plug enny sparkie wire to top of tester. Now with yer ignition switch ON, crank yer starter motor and WATCH yer calibrated tester for blue-snott sparkies jumpin' the gap. Iff'n weak wimpy yellowish-orangish spark may be time for new points or new ignition switch. Or even a new squarecan ignition coil.

As fer buying a commercial wiring harness for yer 12-volt conversion, good luck. Why? 'cuz I know 8-ways to convert to 12-volts and haven't gotta clue which way yers wuz converted..... ..Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason

Before you try adjusting it like Dunk sez, open the bolt in the bottom of the carb w/ the fuel on & drain out a pint or so.

The 12v system you have has different wires than a 6v system. If you are buying a 6v harness, the wire gauge will be fine, but it will have wires for the generator & v/r, which you no longer have....unless you have a 12 generator. Some folks sell 12v wiring harnesses & they might fit your tractor. Or, you can make your own.

1: Try opening the big screw on the carb 1/4 turn at a time and see if that cures that. Other than that, may be some trash in the fuel system somewhere.

2: A 12 volt system will pull half the current thru the wires as a 6 volt system will, as a rule so the 6 volt wires will be twice enough big enough for a 12 volt system.

I made mine out of THHN wire.

Look on this page on this board to buy them:
