Barn treasure update

For those who remember my last post “Barn Treasure” – I got the thing home and have done some minor cleaning and investigation. According to the SN(8N247088) – it’s an early 1950 model – which lacks most of the changes made during the 1950 model year. I mis-identified the steering box as the old-type which explains why I thought it was a 1948…I only had time for a quick look and a few pics initially.

No bad surprises except the tires – they are badly dry-rotted and while they hold air and do fine to make it portable till I get it running, I’m betting they will disintegrate immediately if I stress them. The paint has been retouched at least once but most of the red looks original.
I’ve got some questions I hope you guys could help me with…I try to do my own investigation before asking and my manuals are not in yet - so please excuse me if the answers to any of this is readily available online and I’ve just missed it.

1) Battery size – is there a modern battery-type number that I can call around to locate?
2) Brakes – they work but are not evenly adjusted – where is the adjustment?(hoping it’s not in the drum)
3) This pic shows the brake system – is something missing with the “parking brake” function or do you just reach down and flip them w/your hands? http://www.linearrow.com/main/tractor2/slides/DSCF0603.html
4) It looks like there are two coils on this tractor – the original 6 volt and a mystery round one. I think that is a 6v genny ?? This pic shows the mystery-coil pretty well along with what I think is a resistor (the white thing above the coil.) http://www.linearrow.com/main/tractor2/slides/DSCF0598.html I’ve eyeballed the wiring diagram but it’s not clicking w/me yet - These clues lead me to think there might be a partial 12v conversion or the remnants of one…If any one of you guys can tell what’s going on or tell me how to find out - I would appreciate some enlightenment 

Randy....My preference on a 12v battery is a Group 35. For 6v I believe it is Group 1 but that is just a guess. Good luck!

PS...Yours came off the line not long after mine which is S/N 232580.

If you are talking about a 12 volt battery a group 26 will fit in the 8N. I bought one at Walmart but TSC has them also.

That 'extra' coil: You will probably find that the round coil under the dash has it's HV lead going to the old square can coil up front. The previous owner probably got sick & tired of replacing the weak kneed/ sorry quality square can coils and made a modification to use a more bullet proof round can coil as per Hobo's link that I've included. Unless you are into showing, where original counts, this is something you want to keep.

I see your both of your radius arms have a pretty good bow in them.

I've seen this in a lot of pictures of old 8N's....Anyone know is there a reason why these get bent so easily? Was the the old I-beam style likely to bend? Just curious.

This is caused by slamming your front wheels into hard immovable objects when you have slop on your front axle kingpin. The early style I-Beam type radius rods are much stronger - but I have even seen a few of those get bowed. Ford went to the tube style radius rods to reduce costs and they proved to be strong enough.

re question 4: the "white thing" is a resistor. The 12 volt ignition systems actually use a 8-10 volt coil. While the starter is cranking and pulling the battery voltage down, the resistor is bypassed by a switch in the starter relay running the lowered battery voltage directly to the coil. Once the engine starts and the relay is relaxed, the resistor is in-line, keeping the voltage drop across the coil to 8-10 volts.

Pretty good looking tractor considering what you have in it.
Yes you just flip the pawls up to set the parking brakes. Nothing is missing.
My guess is that it is a repaint on the red as I'm pretty sure they didn't paint the dist. cap coil, carb, etc. at the factory.
Second coil was jerryrigged.
Does it turn over?

You did good Son . Nice batch of pics . The tin seems solid & an easy restore . I'd remove it all & sandblast . Than prime , spot putty to fill in pitting . I never cared for the front mount distributors but what the heck , its a great find . Be proud . Please keep us updated . Randy,

reasure looks to be an accurate description. The tires look far better than mine which are well checked and dry rotted, but mine have lasted 6 years of bush hogging and grading no problem. If you're looking to paint the tractor, spend $14 and get a can of Miller's tire paint and make 'em look new!

1)Can't help you with battery - I went to Wallyworld and bought a big 'un.

2) Brakes are adjusted through the slot in the drums with a screwdriver. You MAY have leaking axle seals though that saturated the brake pads. I had mine 6 years and only fixed the brakes in the last 6 months...but don't follow my lead.

3) Yep, stomp down and flip the pawl.

4) Can't help you on that.
