Front mount distributer coils

Tractor has a front mount distributor - the "coil" connected to the top of the distributor cap has a spark-plug type connector on top - there is round coil mounted elsewhere with a high "tension" wire connection to the top of the front-mount coil. The replacement 6v coils I see available just have a wire terminal. Is this some type of adapter to allow a more generic round-coil to be used?

The good news is that with you guys assistance I think I do have a handle on the layout of the electrical system now. I hope to have the tractor make it's first batch of Marvel Mystery Oil induced smoke this weekend.

There might be some clues (numbers, etc., ?) on the voltage regulator as to the 6volt question. I would also add that as old as it looks, with that rear terminal, etc. my guess is that the gen is 6v, but then as Monk says, 'I could be wrong now".

Remove it and examine it for markings, sometimes they are there if you don't clean them off..... sometimes not. Be sure to look on bottom & under bracket too.

If you find nothing, and have decent ohmmeter, and careful technique, you may be able to determine primary resistance or better yet, connect your coil + resistor thru an ammeter and to a battery & measure current. Whether a 6v or 12v system, you want between 3 & 4 amperes. If you hook the series of coil + resistor to a 12v batt & current is well above the 3 to 4A range, then you can probably be sure it was set up for a 6v system.

I already sent you this in your previous thread, but here it is again.

That 'extra' coil: You will probably find that the round coil under the dash has it's HV lead going to the old square can coil up front. The previous owner probably got sick & tired of replacing the weak kneed/ sorry quality square can coils and made a modification to use a more bullet proof round can coil as per Hobo's link that I've included. Unless you are into showing, where original counts, this is something you want to keep.

Thanks! Sorry I missed the earlier post...Now all I need to do is confirm the round coil is 6v.

Randy..... ..little hint: 12-volt coils don't work on 6-volt systems. Its against the LAW!!! Electro-magnetic law.

Howsomevers, with electrical sorcery, 6-volt coils can be made to work on 12-volt systems with a 12-to-6 volt converting resistor. (white ceramic block of coiled wire that gitts HOT, burnie-burnie) Iff'n you still confused, ask more better questions..... ....Dell

Randy,Yes some one has gutted the old square coil and put that leed on it to accept a coil wire from a conventional round coil. You would be better off using a round coil.Because the square ones are weak and go bad quite often.
