I was told that when you remove a battery from a 9n that you should re-polarize the generator in case it loses its residual magetism. can some one help me understand how to go about doing this. Something was said about jumping accross the cutout?

Jack..... ....that is correct. The 1-terminal 9N genny has a 3rd-brush charging manual control adjust. It also has a 2-terminal roundcan cutout on the steering column under the battery tray.

Everytime you take the 6-volt battery out, there is always the possiblity that the battery is somehow re-installed incorrectly. The 6-volt battery came from the factory with 7in flatbraid strap POSITIVE GROUND to rusty sheetmetal battery tray.

I recommend replacing the 7in short flatbraid with 11in LONG flatbraid bolted to one of yer steering gearbox bolts for NO RUST grounding and faster starter spinning.

To polarize the 6-volt 9N/2N, simply "arc-spark" around the 2-terminals of the roundcan cutout. I use a pair of pliers handles. You can use piece of bailin' wire or whatever. Simple, eh?

Surprizingly enuff, you can polarize as many times as it takes to make you feel warm and charged. Everytime you "polarize", it automagically takes care of improperly installed battery..... ..HTH, Dell

How do you suppose a 6v generator is going to charge an 8v battery? Maybe, just maybe, the v/r has been tweaked to allow it to charge the 8v battery.....but my guess is it hasn't. I'd clean all the grounds, replace the battery cables & either convert it to 12v or get it back to 6v. That 8v battery is going to burn up your points & lights & probably your coil as well. I'd take it back & get a 6 volt.

8v is a pathetic excuse for a bandaid repair of a charge system. either make it work on 6v by tuning it up / fixing it's problems.. or make the leap to 12v.

While you might get the genny to charge the 8v since you can turn it up.. however in the process you are baking the coil, points, and lamps..

simply removing the battery usually does not make you have to repolarize.. however.. repolarizing never hurts.

just jump around the cutout relay...
