Hyperactive Float?

Ol' Dobbin ('42 9N)quit working the other day. There seemed to be some loss of power, then the engine died. This has happened before from rust clogging up the fuel system. This time instead of just spooning out the junk, I soaked the carb parts overnight in cleaner and blew everything out real well before reassembling.

Now gas flows, and flows, and flows. It runs out of the carb, even backs up into the air intake tube. I've checked float adjustment and movement, visible condition of float needle (looks good), and the float itself does not leak--floats like a boat.

Are there some hidden passages in there that I might have disturbed?

Russ, The Main Jet (in the Venturri) should be higher than the gas level in the Carburetor. If the level in the bowel is higher than the Jet, the gas will self-siphon. Setting the Float level at
1/4” should maintain the correct level and the only components are the Float & Valve

1. Make sure your needle valve is seating fully and you don’t have “Burrs” on the sides of the seat ( Disassembly can distort the Seat, leaving protruding metal). I use a magnifying glass and a small round file.

2. Test the top half with fuel Line attached before completing Assembly and make sure the valve & float shut of the flow.

3. Make sure that the Float does not “Hang-up” on the gasket or sides of the lower half. (I slowly rotate the carb after assembly and listen for free float movement). Hope this helps
