Casting codes - just for curiosity

This is long, and basically just for fun - those of you with better things to do (just about anything) stop reading now!

Just for fun, I started writing down and trying to translate the various casting codes on my 8n. The serial number is *418406* which puts the block at late 1951, I think. The casting code on the block is J171, making it September 17th, 1951. That was easy.

The tranny has the "bulge" for the lower reverse gear, and according to Smith's site that didn't come out until 1952. The tranny housing part number is 8N 7006 C. The casting number looks like 51 E14. That doesn't make any sense to me. The E14 would mean May 1st, 1954? Can't be 1944 'cause it has the bulge. Were they still casting parts for 8ns in 1954?

The head part number looks like 8N8080A. The NH Parts site lists it as 6050A. I suppose that could be it. There is a "C 4 5" above the part number, and the casting code looks like "10-30-7" Were they casting "8N" parts already in 1947? Maybe the 7 is really a 1. Looked pretty clear, though.

I can't find any part numbers on the rear axles. I found some casting codes - "02-91" on the right and "2-97" on the left. They also don't make sense.
The casting code on the left side of the rear end housing looks like KYC123. Omitting the KY, the C123 would mean March 12th, 1953. The part number is 8N4024, so it definately isn't a 9n rear end.

Oil pan part number is 9N6675. Casting code is 1SHF11. That one is VERY clear. Any ideas on that translation?

EVERY part on the tractor has red as its base coat, followed by blue, and then light gray. (yes, the entire tractor is light gray -almost white - yucky) Any parts swapping must have been done a long time ago - the blue was probably put on in the 60s.

Again - this is just for fun. Smith's website is great, but some of my codes don't seem to fit the format.

Have a great day!

Joe

I dunno. Reverse is plenty fast, but I didn't think it was TOO fast this winter when I was pushing snow backwards. I've never operated another N to compare reverse speeds. I'm not going to open it up just to check - but if I'm ever in it for another reason I'll check it out.

41 degrees here today, but still about a foot of snow on the ground in most areas. I've got spring fever bad!

I can't say if you are interpreting the codes correctly, in all cases. Who knows?

ALL sorts of parts my get swapped over time, on these old beasts.

As to the tranny casting, maybe samething happened to it early in it's life, and it was replaced by a "new stock parts" casting that was produced as a replacment part, even after 8N production had ended.

It would be interesting to see what's IN the transmission... does it have the late-style "slow" reverse", or is it POSSIBLE it was a replacement CASE, and has the earlier-style reverse gears inside. I wonder if that would be POSSIBLE???
