I've read where Zane says to check the pressure relief valve (some call it the safety valve) by connecting an air hose to the back & if it lets air through it's bad. Theres 4 small holes in the side that would leak anyway so how could I be sure it's bad? Is a small amount of air coming out the other end acceptable? If I stick this greasy thing in my mouth & cover the holes should I be able to blow through it at all?
OK, I'll wash it first but surely someone has some experience doing it this way.

Thanks for replies.

I went ahead & got one today. Flushed her good with diesel, raked out a bunch of gunky crud & filled with 90wt mineral oil. (Man they're proud of that stuff!) Curious to see how long the lift stays up now. Surely it'll be better than before.

Ya'll ever took one apart? It looks like a spot weld on the end cap that could be easily cut off to get it apart. If dirt is the usual culprit it maybe it could be cleaned & used again?

If in doubt replace it, it can b tested on the tractor or off,,,, on the tractor push a hose over it and run the hose out the inspection hole, if under a normal load it leaks oil its bad,,, off the tractor you need a tester,,, I made mine, I use a porter power pump to test'em with

I've grease tested them the same way, using a hand pump..

Nice setup.

No, you should not be able to blow through it at all. All it is inside is a small steel ball, spring loaded in a machined seat. The tiniest grain of sand/trash can keep one from sealing.
