Day after Easter Sunday, a friend and I will be driving my F350 truck and trailer from Mpls to Detroit to pick up a NH tractor.

We will be driving with trailer empty going to Detroit. Anyone need something to go that direction?

Never been to Detroit, so I need your advice on what museums, etc to see. I plan to visit the Henry Ford museum (kind of like a pilgrimage to the "Motherland"). Of course I'm a motor head, so no art museums or dinosaurs to be on the itinery. Your advice is appreciated.

I forgot about the Oldsmobile museum in Lansing, it and the one in Flint I mentioned are a bit off your route but may be worth a trip.

I agree with the others about Detroit, I saddens me greatly to see a city that was such a jewl and a hub of prosperity to its current state of hopelesness and despair.

If you like your belongings stay on the interstates, you park that truck and trailer in any part of town, it will be gone when you come back.

Where you are going in South Lyon / Brighton area is nice and somewhat upper crust.

Ah...Detroit....I suspect you are going somewhere around Detroit but not actuallyin the city proper. Don't believe there are any tractors there. Detroit is 87% black folks. It can be one of the saddest places you will ever see. A little history about the area will help you to understand. At one time it was a wonderful place. Quality schools and housing and jobs. In the 1960's "white flight" began. Unsafe conditions drove white people to the suburbs. Property values fell. In 1974 Coleman (soulman) Young became mayor. He hated white people and did a great deal to drive out native Detroiters that were white. Beautiful, quality built homes have fallen into disrepair. Bars on windows are the norm if you live there. 75% of the schools are closed. Only 33% of the high school students graduate. The current mayor is under investigation for pergury and other mysterious things. Native Michiganders in the suburb and rural areas can usually trace ancestors back to the city of Detroit, but sure wouldn't be proud to take you in there to show you a house or school that a family member use to live or attend. It is difficult to describe Detroit and not appear racist. Maybe I am, but I have experienced the hate that black people have for me. No one in my famly has ever been involved in lynching or slavery. All I have ever done is get up and go out and work hard to provide for my family, yet their problems are my fault. How? The jewel that used to be is now just a stain. Now you want to talk about Dearborn?? HAH!

The last time I was there, was in 1971, I wouldn't go there again, for love, nor money...

Watchout for the road work on I-75, I-94 in downtown. I-75 is closed to ALL traffic at the Abassador Bridge. Detours are posted but visit the michigan.gov/mdot web site and check for lane closures. This will make the trip muck easier. If you are into Ford Broncos and Ford truck there is Jeffs Bronco Graveyard in South lyon. He has some restored broncos in his meuseum. I would deffinatley call ahead. He specializes in resto parts for Broncos and trucks.
Just up I-75 in Flint there is the Buick/Sloan meuseum, has all sorts of Buick and GM memorbilia, very cool.
just a note NOT everybody in Mi drives like that, you will see what I mean.
THT,
Brian

When I was at the Henry Ford Musuem last Sept for work I did see the prototype of the 2N on the floor.

In fact it was leaking oil just like my 8N....

Detroit is a dismal place now days. Lots of rough roads and tough areas.

Ford Museum is OK but like the others said it changes over time. Most interesting thing that I saw on my last trip (10+ years ago) was the Lincoln Continental that Kennedy was shot in.

It's like any big city where you have to be careful. I had my truck shot at in LA one night while on the 60 freeway. Bullet came from a car ahead and bounced off my windshield. Never got shot at in Detroit yet.

The Air Zoo in Kalamazoo is cool. You will be on I-94 and going right past that. Watch your speed around Kalamazoo/Battle Creek on 94.

Weather is still dreary but you are used to that I'm sure.

Where are you picking the tractor up? Detroit covers a lot of area.

Bob,

I bought the tractor on E-Bay from a sod farmer near South Lyon, about 12 miles north of Ann Arbor on 23. He says the motels and other businesses are pretty quiet out in that area. Like maybe I can sleep without being interrupted by midnight gunfire....I hope! But I am fully aware there are no guarantees. About 15 years ago, my wife and I were spending a "romantic" weekend at a B&B in Stillwater, MN. About midnight, 2 street gangs had a shoot out just 15-20 yards from out 2nd story bedroom window. Thankfully none of the "incoming" actually came through the window or walls. Both of us were tight to the floor just in case. Made for some interesting conversation at breakfast.

Ann Arbor is a lot better place to sleep than Detroit. You wont believe how bad the roads are.Lots of construction, and it tends to be slow traffic a lot of times.Irritating place, non courteous drivers.Dont Know about museums, but if you park anything on the street it better be locked or whatever is in it could be gone, including the vehicle.

I must have been at "The Henry Ford" before Duffy. Not much to see except the prototype Ford N was still there. The agriculture display was dismantled several years ago because the kids going to the museum aren't interested in farm stuff.
There are (or were) a lot of old cars and trucks. Many are very interesting: Presidential limos etc.
A couple of side trips that you could make:
1. the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run Airport. The original building burned down a couple of years ago but they have a display in an old hanger on the west side of the airport. Flyable aircraft include a C-47 (DC3), a B-25 and a B-17. On the east side of the airport is a static display of vintage aircraft next to where the original hanger was located. You can drive up to the fence and look but not get to the planes.
2. Kruse Auction museum in Auburn, Indiana. And the Chord/Dusenburg Museum also in Auburn.
I took my grandsons to the tractor show last Saturday in Auburn and then went on the other side of I-69 to the museum. AWESOME for WWII buffs, NASCAR and Indy fans. Also some Hollywood vehicles. K.I.T.T from Knightrider and 2 Batmobiles and a bunch more.
They rescently acquired 147 vehicles, 50 motorcycles and 279 uniforms representing every nation that fought in Western Europe (I'm reading from a picture post card) of WWII vingate. These vehicles are in extremely good condition though, currently, most don't run.
We want to go back and spend the day there.

What did you think of the Show? My wife and I went Friday, thought it was VERY good. Many of my best Ford friends had tractors there, and I got some hard to find parts for a cultivator. We did not have / take time for the museums. I would like to return and visit them. joe

Good show. About 60 Ford tractors and many "others". I also visited with numerous friends but I also missed some whom I hoped to see. I did not find any parts or treasures to ad to my collection. I didn't go to the auction as I did not see anything there that I couldn't live without. This show provides a nice warm-up for the coming season.

My advice: Get in. Get your tractor. Get out.

That's not meant to be offensive to you. I just REALLY don't like Detroit. I try not to go there for any reason. Milt's experience at the museum sounds about right from my experience. Maybe there's a board member that lives there and knows where the good stuff is that can help you out more.

There is (or was) a good air museum in Battle Creek. Haven't been there in years. If quality museums are what you're looking for, Chicago's probably a better bet.

Joe, who lives in the much nicer, non-Detroit part of Michigan.

Joe's right. Stay out of the downtown area unless you want to gamble (your life and money) and keep on the main highways. Watch out for potholes big enough to swallow your truck and trailer. Don't get close to the mayor. Avoid the street beggars as they can be real offensive. Avoid the People Mover system. Don't look people in the eye as you may get shot.

Other than that you should be OK. Did I mention to avoid the potholes (The ones in the pavement)?

Hi; I went to the Ford Museum last summer to look at old tractors. ( I have a 1950 N ) I entered the museum paid something like $20.00 and then asked how to fine the tractors and they told me they no longer had the tractor exhibit. They would not return my money so I looked over the place and it was a waste of my time.
