I have a 48" 8N that I use for plowing and general grading work. It has recently begun to hesitate, backfire and stall. It started when warmed up and under load. Will continue this stalling until shut off and cooled down. The tractor will idle forever without a stall. I replaced the coil without any improvement. Any ideas?

Allsew..... ...while carb lean-out will cause some hesitation and backfire and stalling, ENRICHING the down-pointing mainjet 1/8-turn CCW at a time would be my choice until you'd enriched for a total of 1/2-turn, then STOP!!! It ain't there.

Me? I think you were on the right track, weak sparkies. And while the squarecan frontmount sparkie coil is not known for being as robust as we'd like and is a prime suspect fer weak sparkies; I would suspect yer weaksister ignition switch. ($10, cheap) It has ALL the characteristics of yer weak sparkies ...and... the time-lag time-line for heating up and cooling down to semi-correct the problem.

Don't fergitt, yer ignition points. The points gap (0.015") can slip closed or can be "burned" from natural aging and use; and cause yer mentioned maladies. You do know how to check yer points by removing the 2-bolts holding on yer frontmount distributor and working on the kitchen table, don't you? ..... ..respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Thanks for the reply Dell. I'll try the carb adjustment first. With luck that will solve the problem. If not I have had suspicions about a retarded spark somehow under load. I have not taken the distributor off yet. Will need to read the manual again and follow the instructions. I do remember that all service on the points and distributor looks like it can be done at the kitchen table.

Open up the main jet on the carb a half turn at a time and see if that helps. A lot of times a back fire is because the carb is running a bit lean

Another response also suggested the carb adjustment. I hope this will work. Will try it.
Thanks
