I have an 8N with front mount dist. I have noticed that when starting the ammeter/voltmeter does not move at all - when I do the 'short' between the regulator posts bat/arm the needle jumps a little but nothing else when starting - with the cap off the regulator if I push down on the 'points' in there the needle shows a charge but then when released it just sits in the middle - does not move when lights turned on or off either.

Has the regulator died? Is there a simple test to see if it is working or not?

the inside of the regulator is spotless clean - like new.

If this is the problem any suggestions as to where I can get a new regulator? Could a bad earth cause it not to work properly?

Lee..... ...while voltage regulators are not bulletproof, (note - most autoparts stores DO NOT accept electrical returns) Yer description is more like AMMETER INACCURACY. Ammeters are generally 20% accurate. But even yer $10 el-cheapo voltmeter is 5% accurate.

Quick and eazy test whether voltage regulator is working correctly or not. Connect yer voltmeter ACROSS the battery posts BEFORE you start yer tractor. Then after 15-mins of 1/3-throttle, again measure the VOLTS across yer battery. Should be about 1-volt more than before starting. (ie... 6.3v before, about 7.3v after) Simple, eh?

Don't like the voltmeter reading? Then clippie yer 2-posts on side of yer genny barrel. (insulated field & ground) This will cause yer genny to OUTPUT maximum. Now read yer battery volts and yer dashpanel ammeter. CO NOT leave clippie attached for TOO LONG time as genny will OVERHEAT and throw melted solder and BURN-UP..... ...Dell

You didn't say anything about whether the battery is functioning OK or whether it is running down with tractor use & requiring a charger or not.

If all is well, you must conclude the the gen/reg charging system is functioning & keeping the battery up.

Yes, it needs a good "earth". (BOTH the gnerator AND the VR.)

Since this is an "A" system generator, try shorting the "F" (FLD) terminal to ground at the regulator or at the generator. This bypasses the "regulator" function, and the generator should begin to charge at full output, and pull in the "cutout" section of the VR. Do this for s short time, for testing only, as the generator will soon overheat from overcharging.

Suggestion... DO NOT manually close the cutout points anymore. Sooner or later, they will stick, and LOTS of smoke will be let out of the regulator and generator!!!
