Finally got my manuals in - Now I see why everyone says be sure to get them. Lots of mysteries answered in just a few minutes skimming them.

I do have questions though:

If I get an overhaul kit and new valves and "inserts" aka "seats" do i still have to have both ground to match each other?
If so - how much should I budget for that?

Basically I'll have to farm out any machine work so I'd like to have an idea how much my machine shop bill might add to the overhaul cost.

Of course I know it would be only a ballpark number....

Can re-sleeving be done properly by the home mechanic? I've got a freezer, oven and rubber mallet :)

Absolutely - no oven or freezer needed: TOH's sleeve tools

That freezer might come in handy in the off chance he fails to maintain proper beer management (PBM). Achieves nominal temp quickly.

My $.002 answer to ONE question... in reply to nondem, 03-20-2008 09:21:48

If you have new valve seats installed, they need to be touched up with a seat grinder to be sure they are concentric with the VALVE GUIDE BORE.

The valves SHOULD be OK out of the box.

Here's my antique seat grinder, PERFECT for woking on antique engines!

I would agree the valve seats need to be touched up. But ALSO have the valves themselves checked in a grinder for that purpose. Recently bought new valves (2) and one was not correct! Grinding corrected it. It is cheap and I would recommend it.

The VALVES can easily be checked by coating the faces with Prussian Blue, slipping them in place, and giving them a twist, then pulling them back out, and looking at the contact pattern.

If no Prussian Blue is at hand, a series of pencil marks all around the valve face will serve the same purpose.
