What is the thing in the middle of this aftermarket steering wheel? What does it do?

I haven't seen them on tractors but assume they would work the same as they did on forklifts. When your front wheel hits a obstacle , this has a built in clutch preventing such incidents as broken thumbs , wrists. Worked excellent on forklifts. Stan

Kevin..... ....its a steering wheel DAMPENER (shock absorber) made by Kosch Manufacturing Columbus Nebraska, "steering wheel off of 600 ford tractor will fit others very rare! as is condition, did not take internals apart.

Sherman Bros. also made one for N-Tractors, as well as their more famous Auxiliary Trannys. Kinda neet to have when driving over VERY RUFF GROUND like brushhoggin' and hay raking, where rocks and holes will jerk yer steering wheel..... Dell
