I noticed today that one of my radius rod caps is cracked . I looked in the YT catalog and didn't see anything. I'm thinking mine is aluminum (looks like). My 8N looks about the same except the 8N looks like cast iron . Will they interchange ? Oh and I'm wondering ow th ell did that happen!

Andy:

Chinese made reproduction radius rod sockets and/or caps are readily available. They are inexpensive so you might want to to swap both sockets and caps on both sides to tighten things up a bit.

I may have one. I'll have to look. I think an 8N cap will work. They look the same to me.

Andy..... ..generally, repair of cracked radius rod caps is by WELD. In situ or removed and done at welding shop. Loose sockets are usually "shimmed" by soft copper washer. (hole is beneficial to fit around ball) TIP: use magnet to check for aluminum or iron..... ...Dell

Dell , I was so sure it was aluminum , but I did check and it turns out to be steel ! But is it really worth welding ? Crack goes across one of the bolt holes . Think I'd rather get another one if I can . Think theres already a penny in there and that's what cracked it ? Or do they crack from shifting back and forth when they're worn ?

Andy,
Dunno why it cracked. I would replace it myself.
Shouldn't be expensive. A few bucks and shipping.
I'd put an ad here in the classifieds for one.
An old timer told me the way to adjust for looseness around the ball is to put the flat side of the cap up to a grinder and remove a little of the metal. Grind and test to get a good - not too tight fit.
Where in MN are you. I'm in the Cities. Columbia Heights

I went out and looked at the other side and It's just starting to crack!! So now I need two of them . I'm thinkin' maybee It's caused from having a loader on . And ya know just last month I had chained it to the trailer and hauled her home. Sure glad they didn't pull out then !! I went way up to Alexandria to pick this one up. I'm located down by Albert Lea . Ground is bare down here, we didn't get ANY snow...nada... zipo

We've gotten at least 3" maybe even 4" and at 8:oo am it's still coming down though lightly.
Good luck with your caps.
