If you git # 8N14401B harness it will B pre wired for the starter button BTW git a 6V harness the cheap one that goes for around $20,,, you will wire the tractor purt near like a 6V set up,,, other than you will not b using the OEM voltage regulator,,,, the regulator wires will B used tho,,, tie the red and yellow together,,, use the white wire to excite the # 1 terminal of the alt,,, you will have a extra black wire,,, you don't need it or use it to run headlights

You also need a OEM ignition resistor # A8NN12250A and one more resistor,,,, you need to measure the resistance of the coil from the top post to the springy thingy

Thanks for the help gents, I will settle for any setup that works, I am not beholding to this setup, as long as I need to fix it, I will do it right for the 12 volt that it is now.....If I can find a diagram that tells me how to setup the push button starter and wiring to the solenoid etc etc I will do that...I can buy what I would need to make it work, But I need help on EXACTLY what to get....this info is not in my shop manual..it only covers factory setup, ....instead of guessing at which part caused what, maybe I best get a new alternator ( this one is probly fried now) after smoking, get a new push starter and ammeter...the solenoid still works, I had it running again after the alternator smoked.

Dell, it is a "feature" not a "bug", it is done on purpose for the dial-up users, they don't have to endure a large download, unless they click on the thumbnails.

nuguy..... ...Yer pictures look just fine and are full page on yer webshot homepages and I can tell you I ain't gonna try to guess why yer having problems. Why?

Some well meaning but un-knowledgeable autoparts guys try to sell a 4-terminal starter solenoid to unsuspecting electrically challenged nuguys like you, claimin' "itt'll work" and it generally don't. The BIG starter push'em button by the tranny shifter "grounds" the starter solenoid as a tranny neutral safety scheme.

The original 3-terminal 8N's starter solenoid mounts onto of the starter with the itty-bitty middle terminal facing the engine block. The itty-bitty terminal is connect thru the dashpanel to the BIG starter push'em button next to the tranny shifter.

I know of 3-different 4-terminal automobile starter solenoids and only 1-WORKS in tractor application, iff'n you know electricity. And would you believe the original 6-volt 3-terminal starter solenoid works just fine on 12-volts? But I flunked mind reading (just ask my ex-wife of 32yrs) and I don't know which starter solenoid you have.

You write..... ."now after 10 minutes of running fine the alternator started smoking, any ideas?"..... ..nope, but there should be NO relationship between 3-terminal starter solenoid and 12-volt alternator. But stranger things have happened..... .....HTH, Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason. That said; I know 8-ways convert to 12-volts and they all work, and NONE need or use a 4-terminal starter solenoid or 3-terminal twist to start ignition switch

Dunno know why yer pictures are itty-bitty didn't show like yer webshots..... .Dunk???

I won't argue with Hobo, on the saftey button bypass, I have to agree that isn't a good idea.

From what I have heard, the first 9Ns didn't have it, and Henry himself nearly got it, from it.

I tried to post this in my other post, after replacing the soleniod the alternator smoked....does the picture appear correct for an 8N, 1948 front mount dist. converted to 12 volts ?...I cant find a diagram for this conversion, they all have a coil or something different from my setup, this is how it was when I got the tractor, and it run fine til the solenoid burnt up, then after replacing it the alternator smoked out too...So I guess a new ammeter and alternator will fix it all, IF the wiring is correct..it is key switch to start, the original starter button is disconected..just have the alternator, a resistor I believe, ammeter, soleniod, and key switch to start.....no wiring for lights etc....HELP ! :)

If you had posted this in the classic forum(instead of the modern) it would have worked.

The modern uses tags.
